Random News Round-up: Not Just Games This Time
Or "what I've found in my inbox and I think should be recounted to you, but I don't think it could stand up to a full post on it's own." This week! Square Enix announce a new Kingdom Hearts, Microsoft put TrueColour technology in their new webcams, and Crackdown 2 is dated.
- I've never been much of a fan of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, have you? Something about it just sort of rubs me up the wrong way, mashing the worlds of Disney and and Square together, despite the fact they don't compliment one or the other at all. And yet, it's well on its way to a fifth instalment, with Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep just announced by Square Enix to be coming to the PSP.
It's "a prequel that reveals the untold origins of the popular Kingdom Hearts franchise," apparently, featuring three main characters (Terra, Ventus and Aqua) and Disney characters and settings new to the franchise, such as "Seeping Beauty’s Enchanted Dominion, the Dwarf Woodlands from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Deep Space from Lilo and Stitch."
Square Enix titles are a good fit for the PSP I think, though all this reminds me is that I haven't spent any time with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII despite owning it forever!
- Microsoft has announced three new LifeCams with TrueColour tech, which if you're unfamiliar with is supposed to offer better video even in really bad lighting conditions, say in a cave; under the bedsheets with a torch; if you've been swallowed by a whale but still need to video blog. I've got one of the Microsoft LifeCam Cinemas and it's a great little webcam--not that I use it that much, honestly--so the addition to Microsoft's webcams of better tech (on top of their many features already) is pretty good news.
So, there's the LifeCam HD-5000 (720p HD widescreen, auto focus) for $59.99 coming in April, and there will be an exclusive HD-5001 for Futureshop which'll feature a white faceplate. Then there's the LifeCam HD-6000 for notebooks, which is also 720p HD widescreen with auto focus but with a more compact design, 360 degree rotation and a carrying case. That one will be exclusive to Futureshop too and be $69.99.
- Microsoft has also announced that Crackdown 2 is to hit on July 6th. Developed by Ruffian Games, a studio made up of many the same people who made the original Crackdown (at Realtime Worlds) it looks to continue the amazingly joyful free-roaming action play that made the first such as success. Of course, it features zombies, which is a bit of a played-out addition by now, but way more interestingly is going to feature sixteen player vs. player and four player co-op. July 6th can't come quickly enough.
