cm6870.jpgIf you’re looking for a new desktop computer to take back to school that has plenty of horsepower to the most demanding of applications, there are a few options you could chose from. The Asus CM6870 definitely deserves a place near that list.

This is no slouch of a machine. Under the hood you’ll find a third generation core Intel Core i7-3770 quad core 3.4GHz Ivy Bridge CPU backed by a whopping sixteen gigabytes of RAM. Thats a lot of power under the hood, robust enough for just about any high intensity computing on the pre-installed windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

If you’re looking for a gaming machine, this is certainly a good choice. I tested it out with Diablo III, Crysis, and Battlefield 3 and it performed admirably with high graphical settings. Thats all thanks to the nvidia GeForce GT630 graphics card.

The Asus CM6870 features a Blu-Ray and 12x DVD burner combo drive and 7.1 channel surround sound audio support making it great for enjoying high definition movies on. The 2TB internal hard drive gives you ample storage space for all those files and move, with an additional hard drive bay available on the inside making it ready for future expansion if you ever decide to.

This machine has a number of nice little features to round off the package. 802.11/b/g/n wiFi, a 16-in-1 card reader, HDMI, VGA and DVI outputs, six USB 2.0 ports (two at the front, four in the back), and four USB 3.0 ports on top of that (two in the front and back respectively). It even comes with a keyboard and optical mouse to give you a head start.

The icing on the cake is that this computer is eligible for the Windows 8 pro upgrade offer allowing you to get Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 when it's available!

Designed with the heavy media creator/consumer in mind, the ASUS CM6870 desktop PC houses a powerful 3rd generation Intel Core i7 processor, Blu-ray disc player, Smart Cooling System, NVIDIA GeForce graphics with 2GB dedicated graphics memory, and a slew of ports, inputs, outputs, and slots - including USB 3.0 - to handle your every need.

They keep putting this machine on sale and further dropping the price. The processor is good but should have been the 3770K.

The powersupply is underpowered at 300Watts and the Video card is a low end one. I doubt that it could run any of the new games in 1080.

The 16GB ram is good but the 2 Terrabyte hard drive is cut in half for hidden system files.

It would be a good machine  when you upgrade the PS to a 650W and put a decent video card in the system.

Maybe if they keep dropping the price I will pick on up when it makes sense knowing that I will have to put some money into it right away to make it useable.
