20111112 crayolaGriffin Crayola ColorStudio HD - $34.99

App from App Store - Free

Colouring isn't just for walls and furniture anymore.

If your kids love your iPad, let them color virtually with the Griffin Crayola ColorStudio HD app and stylus.

My son is 4 1/2 and his penmanship isnt quite there.  Is it because he's a digital kid? Maybe.  He can navigate a touch screen like nobody's business, but he struggles when it comes to scribbling images or letters on paper.

Now there's a chance to combine the two experiences with the Griffin Crayola ColorStudio HD app.

The app is free from the iTunes store and it works by touch, so you don't need the stylus, BUT the stylus does give an authentic coloring feel and is great to train my son how to use writing tools.

The stylus a thick magic marker type device with a rubber tip.  There's a little bit of extra friction between the screen and the stylus compared to regular colouring tools, but my son didn't seem to mind.

The best part of the device is the variety in one simple app.  Kids can choose from coloring templates or they can design their own images from assorted clip art.  They can also just grab a blank screen and draw.

When it comes to the colouring, they can select a wheel with markers, felts, crayons and coloured-pencils in a rainbow of colours.  And the textures are true to form depending on which tool you choose.  There's the waxy ribbons when you choose crayons, the whispy charcoal of coloured-pencils or thick wetness of markers on the image.

Kids can choose to automatically stay in the lines, or scribble wherever they want. When they're done they can choose to save the image for printing, or animate it with sound and movement.

The Griffin Crayola ColorStudio HD  was a fun way to spend an afternoon colouring together -  my son loved it.  It's a great way to leave them alone to colour on the fancy couch without worry that any messes will be made.

I think this is an iPad selling app (as if Apple needed something else to convince people to buy one)  Honestly though, how many families do you think have been sitting on the fence in terms of a new laptop or tablet for themselves and their young kids to play and learn together.  As a father of a 3 year old, I can tell you the answer is TONS.  This app gives parents and kids the chance to use technology TOGETHER and begin the learning of an emerging and soon to be commonplace technology at a very young age.  After using apps like this a kid would be a tablet PRO by the time they are 10.
