Review: Sony PRS-T2 eBook Reader
Sony has a new eReader on the market. The PRS-T2 refreshes their previous model of Reader Wifi which was already quite popular. It brought some unique features to the table and had an attractive price point. This new model keeps all the things we liked about that previous model and adds things like direct integration with Evernote, smoother performance, and a more refined package overall.
At a glance it might be hard for the casual observer to spot the difference between the PR2 and any other e-reader. It's your usual flat, matte black rectangle more or less, though red and white options are also available. The 6” E ink Display isn’t anything too out of the ordinary for a product like this and does the job well, feeling very natural and easy to use for extended periods without eye strain.
This unit features 2GB of onboard storage and a microSD slot which lets you expand upon that by a much as 32GB so you’re not likely to be wanting for storage space any time soon. The front face sports several distinct raised hardware buttons allowing for easy navigation left, right, home, back and to the menu. It sure beats the mushy buttons of some other readers on the market, or the even worse software buttons. These articulated controls make a world of difference for usability, as far as I’m concerned. Of course there are still software controls to augment the experience, including pinch-to-zoom on the touchscreen, and the bundled stylus allows for annotations on the fly. This proved to be a very useful feature when reading, and feels surprisingly natural.
The big star of the show here is the Evernote and Facebook integration. Users of the PRS-T2 can post short passages from their readings to Facebook straight from the reader, complete with book cover, author and title. It gets even better with Evernote, allowing you to quickly save and recall anything you clip for later reading. If you’re already a big evernote user, you’ll be familiar with the advantages of the platform, and understand why it would be such a boon to have on a reader like this. Overall this is a pretty solid device and stands up well against the competition. It has an attractive price and solid feature set.
The Sony Reader is a feature-packed eReader that's meant for serious readers. The crisp, paper-like display is easily readable even in direct sunlight, and with Evernote compatibility you can easily send documents and web clippings to the Reader to read later. It includes a free voucher for an eBook of the first Harry Potter novel, and you can post your opinions about it onto Facebook.
