Originally released way back in 1983, Spy Hunter is one of the oldest and most iconic game franchises. When it first came out it was so distinct and really made its mark on the landscape. Back then it was great to be able to take on the role of the agent behind the seat of the Interceptor as you evaded enemy attacks and hunted down your prey both over road and waterways. Well last week the series got a much-needed reboot on the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS handheld game systems.
This new Spy Hunter reboot takes close inspiration from the original. The key ingredients of the Agent, his car, and the great spy-movie-like music are all there, blended together to give us something fresh with some added spice. While in the original your car could transform between sports car and speedboat modes, this time you are treated to the ability to shift to off road vehicle too.
While traversing the landscape, whatever form it takes, you can make use of the Interceptor’s extensive arsenal of weaponry. You’ve got all sorts of toys here from light machine guns, to high tech missiles. You can reconfigure them, upgrade them and modify your loadout as needed with the experience points you earn mission to mission.
The core game-play is the same as you’ll remember from 1983 through. Each mission has you travelling to a destination, trying to survive whatever comes your way at high speeds. You can take advantage of branching pathways to mix it up or make use of the new UAV for recon.
I really enjoyed this game. Its fun, over the top action. The upgrade system gives the title that touch of modernity without destroying the core gameplay elements we’ve grown to love from Spy Hunter. Just get in your car, hit the gas, shoot things up, and try not to die.
