Review: iPad Cover Options

10154195.jpgThere's something curious about products from Apple.  They're hailed for their simplicity and elegance in design, but the first thing all users do is slap a case or cover on the product.

The iPhone is gorgeous, but if you dont have a case on it, you're asking for trouble when the slick surface slips from your slippery hands.  Same with the iPad.  It's a tight piece of architecture, but if you got one from Christmas that's still sitting on your desk commando - you need to cover that thing up.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, there were many different cases being toted around for iPads, from Chinese cheapskates that included bluetooth keyboards, to elegant cushioned folders that made the iPad look like a hardcover book - they were everywhere.  Here are some other options you could consider:

If you want to create content, taking a keyboard on the go is easy with the Keyfolio Bluetooth Keyboard ($109.99). There's a reason Steve Jobs says he hasnt made a touch screen iMac or Macbook - it's just not comfortable.  When you add a keyboard to your iPad, you're effectively turning it into a touch screen notebook and it's awkward.  You have to reach to touch the screen and move the cursor, while typing on the keyboard.  The Key Folio case feels very heavy taking away the attraction of the iPad.  It's also impossible to fold over.  If you want to read content on your iPad, it flops around uncomfortably.

I tried it for a week, and was excited to take it off and get back the original Apple iPad Case ($46.99).  It's a slim and simple case that protects your device, has the feel of a book and can flip open to create a stand.  Since I mostly use my iPad to consume content and not create it, this is the case I own.

If you really don't want to get a case for your iPad, but want to still personalize it, slap a Gelaskin on your device.  It's a sticker that will protect it from getting scratched and turns a plain iPad into more of a conversation piece.

catch the buzz ... pass it on.
