Sega's been full of surprises lately, releasing new Sonic titles and revamped re-releases one after another. While the blue blur hasn't always been the most loved character, Sega's transition into more nostalgic gameplay has definitely been winning old and new fans alike.
During the Sonic Boom community fan-fest at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Sega made a surprise announcement that Sonic Adventure 2 would be re-realeased on XBLA and PSN in stunning high-definition. First released in 2001, Sonic Adventure 2 was one of the last great games to be released on the Dreamcast, offering us a new and exciting look into the Sonic universe. A big imporvement from the original Sonic Adventure, SA2 offered plenty of fun platforming moments many people at the time couldn't help but admire.
It was a jump in a new direction, and while that journey into 3D platforming didn't become as successful or as liked as Sega may have hoped it would be (need I mention Shadow of the Hedghog?) it was a risk that was bound to be taken. In fact, if Sega didn't delve into 3D platforming they might never have released stellar games like Sonic Colors or Sonic Generations. I think it was a matter of figuring out the proper middle ground for such a heavily nostalgic series.
That said, SA2 was a step in the right direction despite some shortcomings. It didn't focus so much on Sonic as it did sub-characters but it did so in some really cool ways. I can see why Sega would decide to re-release such a well-remembered game, and I'm sure there are many people out there who've been waiting for this.
SA2 will feature enhanced graphics, achievement/trophy support, leaderboards and much more when it hits XBLA and PSN later this year. No word yet on release date or cost, but hopefully we'll be see it in all it's HD glory sooner than later.
Until then, check out these Sonic/Sega titles:
