Sizing up Toshiba's trio of Excite Android tablets
Toshiba's revamped the styling and focus of its Android tablet line. Last year's Thrive 10 and 7-inch models had competitive specs as well as rugged design treatments and in the case of the 10-inch version, a removable battery.
For 2012, Toshiba refreshed its 10 and 7-inch models now branded under the Excite line of Ice Cream Sandwich enabled devices and they've also introduced the 13.3-inch variant that is the biggest Android tablet we've seen to date.
Toshiba believes that there is an Android tablet for every user. They've covered the popular 10-inch line with the Excite 10 AT300. Shedding the bulky rubber exterior of the last generation, the Excite 10 features a good array of ports as well as the latest NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad core processor, 1GB of RAM and front and rear facing cameras.
Users will also enjoy easy syncing and sharing with external devices through built-in ports, including Micro USB, Micro HDMI and a full-size SD card slot.
The specs of the Excite 10 have been replicated on the new 7-inch Excite 7.7 tablet. The big difference here is the new AMOLED screen used on the 7-inch tablet that really makes photos and video pop. A great device for those who want their tablets compact and easy to carry.
Extremely thin and light at just 0.3 inches and light at less than one pound, the Excite 7 personifies the portable powerhouse. Pricing starts at $499.99 for the 16GB model.
The big surprise of this year's Toshiba lineup is the 13.3 inch Excite model that offers the same innards and features as its smaller siblings but in a bodacious package.
The Venti-sized tablet supposedly targets home users who want something bigger to read, surf the web or play games with. It is essentially the same size as a 13-inch notebook without the keyboard. It takes some getting used to for sure and if you find your current 10-inch tablet hard to hold with one hand for prolonged periods of time, this will only become trickier with the Excite 13. Thankfully, Toshiba is adding a nice aluminum stand for free with every purchase.
The giant tablet measures 0.4 inches thin and weighs 2.2 pounds. It also features a 13.3-inch AutoBrite LED Backlit display, boasts a cinematic 16:9 aspect ratio and 1600x900 resolution, making it perfect for watching HD movies and videos.
A four-speaker sound system with exclusive sound enhancements by Toshiba and SRS. While many apps scale nicely on this expansive display, we're sure that some, specially smartphone apps, will look a little bit strange as developers never considered a screen size of this magnitude for Android.
The Excite 13.3 starts at $649.99 for the 16GB model. All three of the new Toshiba Excite tablets are expected to start selling this weekend. Which size do you fancy?
