If you’re a fan of Hong Kong action films you’ll be at home with Sleeping Dogs. It captures all the gritty environments, over the top stunts, and extreme violence. It's so intense it can verge on silly at times, but all blends together so seamlessly you’ll feel like you’re playing scenes right out of the movies. The game even features voice actors with pretty respectable cinematic pedigrees.
All of this is wrapped up in a GTA style open world with a wide variety of activities from street races, to parkour style chases on foot, martial arts combat, dramatic firefights, and more. It's a world of brutal street gangs ruling the city’s criminal underworld. The emphasis is on an action movie style presentation but players can take a variety of routes in exploring this open world, enjoying it as they like. Tired of fighting? Race around the streets or just go for a walk and enjoy the scenery.
It's not merely a matter of a GTA game transplanted to Hong Kong though, there are some significant differences, like hand to hand combat, and RPG like elements where players can level up various facets of their character, effecting how the game plays out. You can play as a Jackie Chan like super-cop, or give all of your devotion over to the triad and embed yourself deep in the underworld.
This looks to be a very full gaming experience with thought out writing, significant open-endedness, flexibility for a variety of play styles, and a rewarding growth experience for characters. Of course, being as gritty as it is, this game is rated M, for mature audiences.
