The folks at Sling Media have been fairly busy in the last few weeks, what with SlingPlayer software apps being released for Android, Facebook and now the Boxee Box. I’ll be writing a post on the Android experience in a few days, but since the Boxee Box app just came out, I played with it for a few hours and found it to be a great debut.
At first, I wasn’t sure where to find it on the Boxee Box. It didn’t show up under “All” in the apps list, but I did eventually track it down in the “Film and TV” section. Once I installed it on my Boxee Box, I started it up, logged in to my Slingbox account and, sure enough, the screen filled with a signal from my parents’ house.
They have HD over there, and since I use my Boxee Box with a wired connection via a Powerline adapter, I don’t have to deal with Wi-Fi latency, so the picture quality was pretty impressive. Watching hockey, drama programs or even stuff recorded on a PVR, the experience was convenient and satisfying. It may not be exactly 720p HD all the time, but it still looked pretty sweet on my 52” screen.
Getting used to how the controls work takes some time though. The space bar on the remote accesses the main menu, while the directional and action buttons on the other side navigate. If you’ve used the SlingPlayer apps for iOS or Android, then you have an idea of what it all looks like.
With Netflix, NHL GameCenter and a slew of other apps, Boxee is using this latest addition as part of what it calls “cord-shaving”, a mix of cable and Internet content on one platform. This does benefit those who want to watch the same content on a different TV in the same home too. Rather than buy a separate cable box or fiddle with other connections, it’s one option to share the wealth. Of course, you won’t be able to watch a different show if someone is already watching something else, and only one person can access the Slingbox at one time.
Nevertheless, this is still a cool way to watch live TV remotely, so give it a shot if you have all the right gear in place.
