Sony impresses at CES 2012 with Tablet P, Sports Bloggie, 3D & more
Sony roared right out of the gate from day one of CES 2012, making a slew of announcements from celebrities and online content, to Crystal LED and displaying the re-born Walkman.
Aside from what's already been said about the massive Japanese electronics, movies and music maker, here are some of my favourite observations from their booth:
Sony Tablet P
Dubbed as carrying all of Sony's innovations folded in one, the Sony Tablet P is a two 5.5" screened tablet, foldable for easy portability. This innovative clamshell tablet weighs only 0.83 lbs and operates on Google's Android Honeycombe (3.2) operating system.
The two screens is a different proposition from what we've already seen in the tablet market. Sony demonstrated on the CES floor how the screens allow for different functions simultaneously or combine to form one single large screen. For example, you can read email on one screen while using the virtual keyboard on the the other.
In addition to running an Android platform and the benefits of their apps library, the Sony Tablet P offers the full suite of Sony Network Entertainment services, demonstrate a plethora of content, eg: PlayStation certified, "Personal Space" for easy photo and video sharing through Sony's cloud-based service, Reader store, and both Video and Music Unlimited.
Pricing and avaiability in Canada is TBA.
Bloggie Sport HD Camera (MHS-TS22)
Made with the outdoorsy types in mind, the Sony Bloggie Sport HD Camera are rugged, shockproof, dustproof and waterproof and pocket-sized. It is equipped with a 2.7" touchscreen LCD that's fully operable underwater, has four GB of internal memory, Steady Shot image stabilization, LED lighting, four times zoom, flip-out USB for wasy uploading and charging and a built-in rechargeable battery and HDMI output.
The USB feature is awesome as it allows for easy use - no need to carry cords when traveling; charging, transferring and uploading is all there.
Pricing is expected to be around $199 and arriving this spring.
Investments in 3D to go glasses-free
The content for 3D is growing as are the advancements in the technology to go glasses-free on televisions. It's only a short matter of time until we see glasses-free viewing on TVs. There's evidence already glasses-free in the marketplace, from Nintendo 3DS to Toshiba's glasses-free laptop, LG Optimus 3D, it's starting small, but that's the right way to go.
In one corner of Sony's massive CES booth, I was drawn to the large lettering stating "glasses-free 3D." For the second year in a row, Sony was dropping its stake in the ground to show the world its invested in 3D technology. Glasses-free demos were being shown off one BRAVIA TV, and two large LCD screens. While the viewing wasn't perfect, it's great to see advancements in the tech.
Sony continues to demonstrate they are a major player in CES, and the products on display at this year's show didn't disappoint.
