The Hobbit Trailer

by Blogger on 12-22-2011 10:00 AM - last edited on 12-22-2011 10:03 AM

Man, I was really looking for a good pun to header this article with. Something to do with "Hobbitses," maybe (you know, the way Gollum says "Hobbits") Maybe "Hobbitses Trailer" ("Hobbit sees Trailer") but that doesn't work at all. AT ALL. I'm the worst at quick punnery, guys.

Anyway, enough of that. There's a The Hobbit trailer out and you can watch it after the jump.

So! Well, obviously this is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy (avaliable in quite a range of flavours at futureshop.ca) starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, and with, you know, Ian McKellen (or *Sir* Ian McKellen if you're feelin' fancy) as Gandalf, as in the original trilogy.

If you really have been living under a rock since 1936, well there's quite a lot you've got to learn (Hitler was defeated!) but you should know this is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's original book, which is quite a bit tighter and leaner than his later trilogy, yet (for some reason) being split up into two films (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.) Frankly I don't think that's going to work (the first film is probaby just going to come to a clanging halt, and it really just seems like Hollywood trying to bleed us of two movie tickets rather than just the one (let's not pretend it's anything different.)

However, that doesn't mean that taken as a whole this probably isn't going to be a jolly time at the cinema, even though Cate Blanchett is in it, which is pretty much a guaranteed way to make me start and then never stop barfing. Can't wait to see her make a really big deal of how good she is at acting. No subtlety, that girl. Her character doesn't even appear in the original novel! Guh. Nice to see Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy's going to be in it, though. Er, not that he's in the trailer.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be hitting on, um, the 14th December 2012. Unless the Mayans were right, in which case it's never happening.

We'll get a week with the movie if the Mayans were right - end of the world is scheduled for 21 December 2012 :smileywink:

Really looking forward to this - it's something I felt that Jackson should have done first prior to doing LOTR, but since prequels are all the rage in the last decade or so, we couldn't have had The Hobbitt first, because then LOTR would have just been a sequel to The Hobbitt, and that wouldn't be as incredibly awesome as this route is sure to be - it worked for Star Wars, didn't it?

Either way, this tale looks to be as epic as LOTR was, and I'm impressed by what footage I've seen so far (except Cate Blanchett :manmad:).  Not sure how Galadriel will fit into this story, but I can't imagine it will bode well for us purists :smileywink:
