The Maxell AirStash seems like it’s a problem that’s in search of a solution until you actually get a chance to use it. Then it becomes an essential that you’ll want to carry with you in your photogeek bag.
So what the heck is it? Well, it’s a SD capable USB stick. Seems average right? Sure, until you get the part where it has a Wi-Fi radio and a battery built in. The AirStage can instantly create a secure Wi-Fi hotspot that you can share with PCs, Macs, smartphones, and tablets, giving them access to the data that’s on the SD card.
It’s pretty simple to install: just download the AirStash app to your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Android device. Turn the AirStash on and connect to the wireless network it creates. You can set your security settings and network name by plugging the AirStash into your computer to make changes.
Things I love about the AirStash: it creates a Wi-Fi network using b, g, or n network specs. Given that everything I own is now wireless-n compatible, I really like the speed. The battery is a tough one too; I managed to get six and a half hours of use out of it on my first run through. Maxell advertises up to 7, so 6.5 is close enough in this case. And last but not least, it comes with SDHC compatibility AND an 8GB card in the box. I swapped that out and used the 32GB Class 10 card from my Sony DSLR, and was able to stream my files to my iPad easily.
If you don’t have a camera with Wi-Fi capability the AirStash is a great way to upload your stuff to social networks on the go. Slide the SD card out, pop it into the AirStash, and send your photos to your phone for a quick upload.
I found the AirStash to be really handy at bringing my media with me. My iPad is slammed with apps and music, so being able to store my photo portfolio and some videos on an SD card and stream right from there. Carrying a 64GB card in an AirStash means my next iPad will probably be a 32GB again.
The Maxell AirStash is coming to Future Shop soon, so keep your eyes peeled for it!
