The need for Speed: why you should upgrade to UHS SD Cards.
Memory cards are the often-overlooked key component of your camera that can make or break your shot or your video. It’s the part of the camera you’re most likely to add as an afterthought, grabbing the cheapest thing on the shelf. We’ve come a long way, getting into bigger cards, but sometimes it’s easy to forget that speed and quality come at a price.
That’s where new SDHC and SDXC cards come in. If your camera is less than a few years old, chances are it can take advantage of these new cards. The experience that you’ll get with them is vastly different than a standard Class 4 card off the shelf, leading to better shots when you need them.
So why do we need speed and reliability? Well, reliability is self-explanatory, and it’s why we stick to the rule of “2 is 1 and 1 is none” - meaning if you don’t have a backup you could be caught without a functioning item when the time is most urgent. Speed on the other hand, is a harder thing to wrap your mind around. Taking a picture or shooting a film with a slower card still works… but it’s those few moments after you snap the shot or after you’re done filming where your camera’s status light is blinking as your old card tries desperately to keep up. When you’re capturing Full HD, 3D, or 4K video, or shooting massive RAW files, that light can blink for a reeeeally long time.
SDHC and SDXC cards can write at up to 90MB/s and 95MB/s. That’s fast enough to keep up with demanding video formats and RAW shooting. If you’re comparing to original SD cards, that’s 633x faster… if your camera can keep up, that is!
The technology behind it is called UHS-1, and it stands for Ultra High Speed (go figure!). It’s faster for reading and writing in your camera, but it can also make transfers to your computer quicker too. It’s fully backwards compatible with any device that uses SDXC or SDHC, but you’ll only see the speed boost in SDXC devices.
Cards like the Extreme Pro from Sandisk are also resistant to shock, X-rays, wand water, and actually work in the wide temperature ranges we deal with here in Canada.
You'll have tons of space for your photos and videos with the SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-1 card. This super durable SDXC memory card offers 64GB of storage capacity. Using Ultra High Speed bus architecture and Power Core Controller technology, this card delivers faster shot-to-shot performance and also easily captures fast action Full HD and 3D video.
This SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I memory card comes complete with Power Core Controller technology for incredibly fast shot-to-shot performance. Designed for DSLR and HD video, and even 3D video shooting, it delivers speeds of up to 95MB per second - perfect for high speed burst modes.
