Top Five Valentine' s Movies - a man's recommenda tion to help a brother out
For all of you Valentine’s Day saps out there, we have something in common. There is nothing more satisfying to me than curling up on a couch with that special someone on Valentine’s Day – be it your hunny, your cat, or your Snuggie and a bowl of chips – and watching a gushy movie about the wonders of love, and shedding a tear or two. Yeah, that’s right; I’m a man who cries at love story movies. So what! There’s definitely a few movies that pull at the heart strings a little more than others and I’ve compiled a list of my personal recommends that I feel there’s something in each film for everyone. Yes, even the cat.
Let me start with the most obvious choice, aptly titled, Valentine’s Day. The prequel to this year’s release, New Year’s Eve, was the original mash up of what seemed like an endless laundry list of celebrity cameos, embodying every possible relationship and love-infused scenario on the planet. New couples experiencing the bliss of the ‘honeymoon’ phase, recently married couples actually on their honeymoon, relationship meltdowns, breakups and divorces and pretty much every other heart-wrenching situation in between. The added bonus is a lot of the actors in the film are pretty easy on the eyes, and there’s just enough exposed skin to make up for the often times cheesy plot line! If you’re looking for a no-brainer Valentine’s Day knock out flick, then go with the Obvious Choice.

If you’re looking for a new Hollywood Blockbuster release, there are definitely a few titles that have creeped there way onto my favourites list. A lot of creeping has to do with the casting, and the brilliant comedic writing, and less about the actual storyline of the movie. Right. Yes, that’s what I’m telling myself. To be honest, Crazy Stupid Love caught me by surprise and by the end of the film I found myself wanting to watch it all over again, just to relive the Dirty Dancing scene between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone – am I alone on this one?! That one scene alone is EPIC and worth owning this movie. Another new release gem is Life as We Know It starring Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl. Normally, I tend to avoid Katherine Heigl movies as I feel she’s quickly becoming the type-cast actress along the same vein as the often tired Jennifer Aniston rom-com fad; however, these two actors complement each other incredibly and the baby added to the equation makes ALL the difference! Melissa McCarthy makes an appearance in this film as well, and I can’t even begin to describe my love for that woman.

If you’re looking for the ultimate romantic movie, then I think you’ll agree that a little dash of The Notebook (from 2004) is in order. Seriously, this movie is PERFECT for the hopelessly-romantic-at-heart in your life, and it’s a guaranteed heart-string-puller, tear-jerker movie! I love everything about this movie, and the ability it has at resorting faith in the thought of finding that one true love, that is able (and willing) to withstand the true test of time. Wow, that sounded more like a harlequin romance description than a movie recommendation, but to be honest, with The Notebook they kind of go hand-in-hand. I honestly don’t understand why you’re still reading this and why you haven’t bought the movie already. Go! Now! Honestly, for the men out there, if you bring this movie home in time for Valentine’s day, I am willing to bet there will be a fantastic meal in store for you in the future…

Okay. Here’s where I really lose all my shame, and full-heartedly admit that my all-time favourite movie in on the planet (and perfect for Valentine’s Day at the same time) is Dirty Dancing. I have been waiting ALL YEAR to write this post and include this title as my #1 recommend for Feb. 14. Seriously, this movie has all the pieces of a Hollywood Classic. Amazing plot line and script, fantastic dancing, quote-worthy lines and Patrick Swayze! Find me a person who doesn’t like this film, and I will change their mind. There is a special place in my heart for Kellerman’s Lodge, Baby and her family, and the incredible dance duo of Penny and Johnny. I could go on and on, but that’s not nearly as entertaining as this movie! Seriously, if this isn’t part of your personal movie collection, now is the time to pick it up.
