Ubiquitious Wi-Fi when travelling makes me awesom-er!

In an earlier post I discussed how Ubiquitous Free Wi-Fi makes me Awesome; and after re-reading that post recently, I decided it need an update, hence this post.

A couple of the things I've been doing of late relate to people working, traveling and using Wi-Fi to help them stay connected to the office, home and the rest of the world.

Sure, Wi-Fi is just a technology / enabler that lets you get stuff done. How can that be interesting?

Elementary, my dear Watson; it's interesting simply *because* it helps you get things done that you'd otherwise have to be wired to achieve.

Some of the things I've used wireless web-tech for include;

  • Free long distance calls - if both parties use Skype the call is free. You can buy SkypeOut credits to call standard landlines and cell phones. A small headset/microphone is all you need for voice calls. If you have a webcam in your netbook, video calls are solid.
  • Automagically uploading photos to my various online accounts - rockin' with the Eye-Fi Wi-Fi enabled memory card. Simple setting tweaks allow you to automate uploading to any account over any Wi-Fi network. The photos upload when you're in range of a valid Wi-Fi network and your camera is on. No computer required to upload...so cool.
  • Keeping on top of industry / related news - so many ways; dedicated iPhone apps, RSS feeds, email subscriptions, all are available anytime if you've got the Wi-Fi access.
  • Watching the latest cool YouTube video - sure, entertainment, but why not be entertained while waiting in the Montreal Via Rail station for your next train to Quebec...it worked for me this past summer.
  • Editing and uploading the next latest cool YouTube video - a bit trickier as you'll need a mid-range laptop, but more doable today than it was a year ago.

Ok, you get the picture. Anything you can do at your home desktop, you can easily do on the road, with a solid Wi-Fi connection, a good netbook or iPad, or even a PDA sized device or data phone.

Of course, the requisite closing question: What cool travelling Wi-Fi app have I missed that you've used to make you Awesome! Let me know about it in the usual place (the comments section below for you newbies (hey! thanks for stopping by :smileyhappy: )

Wifi has changed the way I live - not being tied to a desk, working anywhere, using the deadtime in queues, while waiting for the kids, etc.

Many people say social media is a time waster - but if you're clever and use the dead time, it actually saves time - you can get stuff done in time when you were just tapping your fingers on the dashboard before.

I love it!!

Thanks Wendy, yep, if you're organized, using the tech really does help fill in the holes!
