Using tech to get ready for the Super Bowl
Football’s biggest prize is up for grabs tomorrow in Super Bowl XLVI between the New York Giants and New England Patriots. The NFL’s championship tilt is always a reason to host or attend a party to watch the game and socialize. But tech-savvy fans might like sprucing up their home theatre and taking in more of the game through smartphone and tablet apps.
Buying a TV specifically because the big game created enough incentive is probably a rare case for consumers, but ensuring that the game can be seen and heard by everyone crowding around the screen is the main focus.
If you don’t have a surround sound system, you could always consider a sound bar as an option to pump out some extra sound. It’s also one of those items that would be useful after the game, and they don’t take up a lot of space in a home theatre setup. Another option is to try plugging in a set of speakers with a subwoofer — assuming you have them on hand — to raise the decibel level a little bit.
Then there are the apps covering the game in a variety of ways.
The NFL has released a commemorative app for both iOS and Android that they call a “digital souvenir”. It covers each team’s path to the Bowl, complete with articles, stats, video highlights and other content directly from NFL.com. When the game is over, the app will update with video highlights, recaps, interviews, photos and more. You can also look at stuff from past Super Bowl games for the historian in you. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the app will update much, if at all, during the game itself.
Not being there is one thing, but you can download a souvenir game program that Chevrolet has sponsored. The app is actually very similar to the one the NFL released. You get each team’s story, stats, video and more. Download this over Wi-Fi because it’s over 500MB in size and requires 1GB of free space on your iPad.
If you’re interested in what’s happening in Indianapolis or want to get a clearer view of Lucas Oil Stadium, download the Super Bowl XLVI Guide app for iOS or Android. The app includes an interactive 3-D map of the stadium and the city’s downtown core, as well as a detailed guide to local restaurants, nightlife and official Super Bowl events. The app also allows taps into the social media buzz going on at NFL Huddle.
If you want to get a glimpse of Super Bowl commercials from the past few years, try downloading A+ Superbowl Commercials. It’s a free app that aggregates whatever’s been uploaded to YouTube.
BlackBerry PlayBook owners who have a love affair with all things football might want to try Pro Football Insider, which will have live tweets from players and analysts during the game.
If there are any others I’m missing, by all means, comment below and let us all know.
