Whoops. Hold off on upgrading that PlayStation 3 HDD for now!

Man, Sony just can't catch a break, can they? You can temporarily strike "upgradeable hard drive" from the list of PlayStation 3 features this week, after the beleagured console manufacturer rushed a security update out the door. The limitations on some PlayStation 3 systems have made it difficult to install a new drive and restore the firmware to a working condition. Oops!

So what happened? Sony's 3.55 firmware update is a full firmware update; one of those updates that seems to take forever to download and install because it's full version of the firmware all in one package. When Sony rushed 3.56 out the door this week (in order to deal with several security issues that are currently plaguing the console) they only updated a few files. That means that the update that is downloaded and stored in the system's flash memory on some systems (new PlayStation "Phat" models and all PlayStation Slim models) isn't sufficient for a full firmware re-write on new hard drives.

What does that mean to you? For the time being, if you've got an 80GB PlayStation Phat or any of the Slim models you're currently unable to upgrade your hard drive.  Hard drive upgrades are rarely a pressing matter, though, so you can probably just relax and wait for Sony to ship FW3.57

In the meantime we can all shake our heads quietly, feeling bad for the guy whose job it was to package up those firmware updates. He's probably updating his "best practices" as we speak. It makes you think, though: would it have been worth it to just leave "Install Other OS" alone? At this point I'd say yep, removing that feature definitely woke a sleeping giant. So sorry, Sony.
