Why Future Shop is keen to go green
This is my first blog post for Future Shop’s Tech Blog, and I’m happy to share with you something that’s very important for our company and to me personally: our environment. I’m encouraged by the momentum we’ve generated in the past two years – it seems we have reached a tipping point of environmental awareness and action. Also, as a parent this has always been an important topic, as it’s our future generations that are impacted by what we do today.
Future Shop is a destination for Canadians and the products we sell are an ever increasing part of our daily lives – just think about three screens that are key to our business and to your life: cell phones, computers, and televisions. Now think about this technology 10 years ago and the technology today. The current generation of these electronics has made the originals obsolete. And as consumers look to technology to share information, and change behaviour, they are also looking for ways to ensure that when products reach the end of their lifecycle they are properly disposed of and recycled back into the manufacturing stream and not into a landfill.
With Earth Day just around the corner, we’re excited to tell you about some of the ‘green’ initiatives Future Shop is undertaking to do our part and help others make a difference to the environment too. I believe Future Shop has a great opportunity to be part of the solution. Did you know since 2008 we’ve collected more than 216,000 pounds of electronics for recycling? Or that we’ve installed Energy Management Systems in 93 of our stores, reducing energy consumption by 10-20 per cent? This is just the beginning.
To help us, and provide you with great resources, we turned to the David Suzuki Foundation. Who better in Canada to get expert opinion and information on the environment than this organization? We’ll be deploying a training tool developed by the Foundation to our 10,000 associates to help them understand how they can become greener in the workplace. Also, see for yourself some of the fantastic content we’ve mined from David Suzuki Foundation on our website on how we can all do our part with some very simple actions.
Here’s a summary of some of the green initiatives available to you at your nearest Future Shop:
- Recycling of small electronics at all Future Shop locations in Canada through our Greentec bins. Retire those old gadgets responsibly at one of our green and white bins located at the front entryways of our stores.
- Recycling of big and small electronics at all Future Shop locations in Alberta. We piloted this project for about six months in Calgary and we’re pleased to roll it out in this entire province.
- “Be Green and Win!” contest. Participate by visiting www.futureshop.ca/greencontest and tell us what you’re doing to help the environment to have a chance to win a $1,000 Future Shop gift card. We’ll donate $1 to The David Suzuki Foundation for every act of green submitted.
In addition to the above, we hope you enjoy our new site and look for our latest flyer (April 9 issue) for some of the great ways to get green with Future Shop.
