Why You (Don’t) Need An iPad (2)

My family loves our iPad.

I bought it to give my wife an easy way to access the web while wandering from room to room with our kids.  If she was upstairs while they napped, or in the basement while they played, I wanted an easy way for her to still pop into facebook and email without leaving the room.

My 3 1/2 year old son took to it immediately and commandeered it as a gaming and video device.  I ripped all his favourite videos into iTunes and loaded them into the iPad.  When my wife and I get tired of Diego and Dora, he can have some quiet time on the couch with his own show while we dig into a movie of our own.

The way he flips through games and apps is mindblowing.  He will play Bubble Ball, Air Hockey and Angry Birds without any lesson.  Even our 14 month old is staring at the iPad with wonder and has quickly figured out what the button does and how to swipe to unlock.

My wife uses it to read the paper every night before bed, a relaxing flip between Flipboard, HuffPo and The Globe and Mail is an easy way to fill her mind with adult conversation once a day with the kids is done.

With today’s announcement of the iPad 2 and it’s slimmer design, front and back cameras and updated iOS, none of our use cases change.

If you already have an iPad, I don’t think it’s necessary to pay the annual Apple Upgrade Tax by picking up the second edition.  The added feature set isnt enough to make the move.

However, if you haven’t yet gone to iPad, now is a GREAT time to jump on board.

As you can tell by my family's use of the iPad, I still think the first edition is great.  I'm not sold on the need for having a camera on a device that's 10" across. While it may come in handy for things like FaceTime, I just havent wrapped my brain about actually taking pictures with the iPad, especially when users are likely to have the swift iPhone 4 already in their pocket.

With the unveiling of the new model, comes a HUGE discount on the first edition.  A WiFi iPad (my model choice) now starts at $419 in Canada (down from $549).  That's a deal, gang.

Even if you *really* needed the camera and extra slim sexy of having the new model on the block, the list price of iPad 2 is coming in at the original iPad's original list price.  Bonus features without a premium price.

Sure, RIM's Playbook is coming "sometime soon," but come March 25, iPad 2 will be in Canada and now is the time to drink the Kool Aid.

catch the buzz ... pass it on

Well said, Buzz. This is a fantastic time for anyone who wasn't convinced by the original to get on-board with a "post-PC" world, but for those out there (yours truly included) who are currently rockin' a flat slab of awesome already... verdict is "skip it unless you're really feeling the burn". It's a very slick, very cool device, but I don't personally see the upgrades changing how I use the iPad currently. Revision 3 for me!

I couldn't wait to get my ipad, but now I wish I had bought a laptop instead. Apple has put restrictions on Adobe Flash Player and therefore anytime I want to catch up on TV shows I have to go to my PC or use my daughters Laptop. I can only download movies that are available at the iTunes store, and there aren't that many, I can't watch clips on Facebook, and I can't play any of the games I play on Facebook. Until Apple takes off theses restriction save your money and put it towards a Laptop. I am completely disappointed....oh yeah, they do not advertise that you cannot use Adobe Flash Player, nor do they tell you this when you purchase it. If you try to download something you get a message from Adobe saying that Apple does not support use of this program, and when I called Apple I was told that there is a "conflict" between Apple and Adobe and until this is resolved there is nothing they can do, and it won't happen anytime soon. It is totally compatible, but they (Apple) choose not to allow usage on the Ipad. This is unfortunate for anyone who purchases the iPad.
