Review: Microsoft Surface RT

by Blogger on ‎01-19-2013 10:29 AM - last edited on ‎01-21-2013 10:26 AM by Retired Administrator

Today we’re looking at the Microsoft Surface RT Tablet. It's one of the most exciting gadgets that came out in 2012 and is now available through Future Shop nationwide. It was released to plenty of oohs and aahs, surprising the tech word and generating a whole lot of excitement. Let's take a closer look at what you can expect.

Fire Emblem bundle.jpg

Are you as excited about Fire Emblem Awakening as we are?  If so, you might want to check out this exclusive bundle for all of you fans of the classic strategy RPG series.

Future Shop will be offering an exclusive Nintendo 3DS bundle that has Awakening pre-installed on the hardware (check out the pretty little thing above).  This royal blue handheld features a beautiful Fire Emblem insignia and a 4GB SD memory card so you'll never have to worry about running out of space.

Quirky Glide

Sometimes the simplest gadgets are the most brilliant, especially in the kitchen. The creative inventors at Quirky designed the Glide for your knife to make cleaning the food debris easy and safe. Again, it’s simple yet so useful…and sometimes I ponder, “how come I didn’t think of that?”

Review: Supertooth Melody headphones

by Blogger on ‎01-18-2013 02:54 PM

Supertooth Melody main.jpg

Supertooth is a company known for blending together audio products with Bluetooth functionality, and the Melody on-ear headphones are one of the newest products sticking to that combination. Lightweight, user-friendly and well thought out, the Melody headphones are a decent set, but not quite to the level that they should be.

Fringe ends tonight. Long live Fringe.

by Blogger on ‎01-18-2013 02:19 PM

An era ends tonight, as one of television’s best sci-fi dramas is about to come to a close. Shot in Vancouver, the wet-coast stand in for Boston, New York, Jacksonville, and everywhere in between, Fringe is a new age X-Files with an incredible cast and ridiculously awesome plotlines.

It shouldn’t have made it. The ratings for Fringe, despite being the best damned thing on television, have been horrendous over the years. Indeed, in spite of Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv, John Noble and Jasika Nicole’s stellar performances, we have all tuned in en masse to “talent” shows and “singing competitions”. Can you convey disgust in a blog? I hope I just did

Disney Interactive Announces 'Disney Infinity'

by Blogger on ‎01-17-2013 03:01 PM - last edited on ‎03-14-2013 02:03 PM by Retired Administrator

Disney Interactive unveiled their brand new gaming initiative, Disney Infinity, at a major media event held in the renowned El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood yesterday.  With Infinity, Disney is taking characters from their most popular Disney and Pixar Animation Studios properties and bringing them together on one game platform. Disney Interactive is calling their new project "its most ambitious gaming initiative ever", and after watching the Infinity presentation, it was clear this ambition is shared by multiple groups within The Walt Disney Company.

Kid Friendly 3DS.jpg

This week on the Kid-Friendly series we're showcasing one of the hottest handhelds out today, the Nintendo 3DS.  Nintendo's opening lineup may have been a bit on the underwhelming side, but since its launch the 3DS has truly shined, offering us a new way to play with its stereoscopic 3D capabilities.  Even if 3D technology isn't really what you're looking for, the sheer amount of quality titles is reason enough to check out this very cool handheld.

The Nintendo 3DS is a bit more on the E-Rated side, but that much better for the smaller tikes. The 3DS has an enormous library to choose from, some better than others, but here are a few of some of my personal E-Rated and T-Rated favourites worth checking out.

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 9.40.21 AM.png

The Consumer Electronic Show ended last week in Las Vegas and we heard a lot about new tablets, phones, and a plethora of cool gadgetries. What about home appliances? Last year, appliances were getting “smart” while this year they are getting “smarter” with high-tech and WiFi. So, when you look for your next refrigerator, will you looking for the one that has a Twitter application?

The day that a lot of Canada has been waiting for is finally upon us. It's the return of Hockey! With NHL hockey coming back for us to enjoy, its a good time to look to all the sport memorabilia on offer at Future Shop. Even if we just look at the NHL themed offerings, we’ve got a pretty wide selection to chose from.

How to get the perfect Man Cave

by Blogger on ‎01-16-2013 04:58 PM - last edited on ‎03-01-2013 03:17 PM by Retired Administrator

People don’t set up rec-rooms as much anymore. You don’t often hear anybody talk about their study. What's becoming increasingly popular is the trend of the man cave. Call it what you will but people love setting up tucked away corners of their home where they can escape to enjoy the things they love to their heart’s content.

3D Printing is the future of creativity

by Blogger on ‎01-16-2013 04:51 PM - last edited on ‎06-26-2013 01:31 PM by Administrator

The incredible thing about the digital revolution, including 3D printing, is how it has democratized creation. Sounds fancy, but what it means is that ordinary people like you and I can make our stuff. Think about it: back in the 80s the revolution was called “Desktop Publishing”... it took the process of printing pictures, documents, books, and posters (along with a whole lot of other stuff) out of the hands of an exclusive group of professionals, and let regular people make what they wanted, when they wanted. It started out rough, with dot matrix printers jamming pins against strips of ink, but has evolved into today’s photo-ready laser and inkjet models that can rival some of the professional jobs out there.

And then we had the digital imaging and digital video revolution in the 90s and early 2000s with the creation of the digital camera, DV camcorder, and readily available editing software. Garage Band turned everyone and anyone into a musician and producer. These amazing advances haven’t destroyed high quality professional work, they’ve just made it easier for more people to become involved in the process of creation.

That’s where 3D printers come in. The future of creation is here, and it fits on your desk.

A Sneak Peek at Ni No Kuni

by Blogger ‎01-16-2013 08:31 AM - edited ‎01-16-2013 09:04 AM

I've been waiting anxiously to play Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, and for so many reasons.  For one, I'm a huge Studio Ghibli film (fun fact: my favourite Miyazaki films are Nausicaä and Princess Mononoke).  Second, I'm a huge JRPG fan and have been tinkering with the genre for many years now.  Third, well, I just really like how developer Level-5 has taken the genre to heart (which the company generally does so adoringly) and creates quality games that are engaging, challenging and harken back to a time long past.

Review: Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2013

by Blogger on ‎01-14-2013 07:38 PM - last edited on ‎05-23-2013 11:52 AM by JorgeM Recognized Expert

Ubisoft made a smart move timing the release of Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2013 with the launch of Wii U. Its usual competition, Wii Fit, isn't due for a sequel until later in the year, and EA Sports Active is nowhere to be seen, making Fitness Evolved 2013 the sole option for Wii U owners looking for a fitness game. Usually lack of competition is a dangerous thing, since developers could easily skimp on quality knowing their game was the only choice available, but Fitness Evolved 2013 makes no such sacrifices. Not only has Ubisoft given us a full featured Wii U fitness game, they've delivered one of the best fitness games ever created, period.

Most Anticipated Games for the Xbox 360

Best of 2013 Xbox 360.jpg

It's that time of year again!  With 2012 behind us, it's time to look ahead and celebrate new beginnings. And yes, that counts for video games too!  2013 is already panning out to be quite the year for gaming, with enough exciting, new releases to tide you over well into the summer.  The second half of the year is a bit more on the... questionable side.  There are still plenty of TBA release dates ahead of us, and many we're crossing our fingers for (yes, I'm looking at you Last Guardian), but why not live in the moment and relish what's certain (or mostly certain)?  Luckily, we have plenty of them.

Here are our picks for most anticipated games for 2013.  Did your game of choice not make our list?  Let us know in the comments section below!

Stay tuned very soon for more games of 2013!

Review: Sony Blu-ray Player (BDPS185)

by Blogger ‎01-14-2013 10:04 AM - edited ‎01-15-2013 12:42 PM

Sony's BDPS185, now at Future Shop,  doesn't just usher an era of affordable Blu-Ray players, it also brings SmartTV-like features and a variety of free streaming content from the Internet to any HDTV you may have at home.

CES 2013 Wrap Up: Is this the year for 4K?

by Blogger on ‎01-14-2013 08:31 AM - last edited on ‎05-16-2013 11:42 AM by JorgeM Recognized Expert

Samsung has just announced that their 85" 4K panel will run over $30k, with pre-orders starting in Korea. 4K, or Ultra HD (not to be confused with Netflix's new Super HD service) was one of the big stories. So the question is: will this be the year for 4K.

CES 2013: CaseMate is classing things right up.

by Blogger ‎01-14-2013 08:31 AM - edited ‎01-14-2013 08:31 AM

It’s always interesting to see when a brand shifts gears. Mad Catz did it a few years ago, pledging that they were going to turn over a new leaf, and work harder to make better quality products. They delivered on it too.

CaseMast has done the same thing. They’ve got a sexy new logo and some elegant new styling. Pledging to create more upscale products, they’re catering to a premium audience.

Shattering your device, whether it’s a tablet or a phone, can be heartbreaking. That’s why Gorilla Glass has been so popular; it does a great job preventing cracks and scratches in screens.

CES 2013: Fujifilm does fashion!

by Blogger on ‎01-14-2013 08:31 AM

The Fujifilm X-series of cameras is svelte and sexy. I’ve mentioned before how much I love them and think they’re great cameras. The new X20, shown off at CES, really captured my eye with classic lines and powerful performance.

LifeProof cases are pretty famous for being almost everything-proof. They’re military-spec approved from impact, cold, heat, water, dirt, and so on. That’s why it was so cool to see the Fre case for iPhone 5 put to the test.

CES 2013: 3D Printing

by Blogger on ‎01-14-2013 08:30 AM - last edited on ‎01-14-2013 02:31 PM by Retired Administrator

Future Shop has been a great place to buy printers since the start of desktop publishing. They’ve had every major model of popular printer from Canon, Epson, Lexmark, and Brother. And while printing is going to continue to be an important part of what we all do with computing, it’s time to take it to the next dimension. Literally. It’s time for Future Shop to start carrying 3D printers.
