Blu-ray Review: Ted

by Blogger ‎12-22-2012 10:23 AM - edited ‎12-22-2012 10:27 AM

So what is it exactly about Seth MacFarlane's works that keeps people raving?  Is it the filthy humour? Clever dialogue? Unique and lovable characters?  Unabashed self-awareness? Playful pop cultural references? Love it or hate it, you can't deny the impact MacFarlane has made on millions of people, and there's nothing that he won't try.  Hell, even live-action doesn't seem quite so far-fetched anymore.

But this is the last weekend for Christmas shopping and while you might have gotten all the big gifts already, don’t forget about those stocking stuffers (or quick gifts for people on your list). Review: Assassin's Creed III Liberation

by Blogger on ‎12-21-2012 12:28 PM

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation is the most ambitious Assassin’s Creed handheld game ever attempted – and it’s also the best. Fitting a console-quality Assassin’s Creed game into a tiny game cartridge is no easy task, and while Liberation has its faults, the overall package is quite impressive.

The new iRig MIC Cast is a compact little microphone that can attach to your iPhone mini jack to give you a big quality boost if you’re doing any sort of audio recording. The onboard iPhone mic may be okay for talking on the telephone, but if you want to use your smartphone to record a podcast, interview, singing, or any other audio you’ll need something better. Do you own a 1080p television that suffers from lacklustre audio performance? Designed as a niche component, Bose’s stylish Solo Sound System was specifically engineered to replace your television's built-in sound. Let's take a more detailed examination of this component, and see if it's the audio solution you've been looking for.

RadioTower.pngIf you’ve got a big home and you’ve been having issues with accessing your network in the far reaches of it there are a few things you can do beyond simply learning to live with the problem as most people will. Sure, you could always upgrade your router to the latest and greatest unit to give you maximum WiFi signal strength at long range. That method won’t be likely to save you money and still may not give you the performance you’re looking for. Enter the wireless network range extenders. You might not even realize these exist but they’re just what the doctor ordered if the above situation sounds like it's describing you.

Review: Gear4 Renew SleepClock

by Blogger ‎12-19-2012 07:30 PM - edited ‎12-19-2012 07:31 PM

How many hours of sleep do you get a night? Eight hours? Seven hours? Maybe less? As someone who works in morning television I can usually count on one hand how many hours I get each night. Your body never really gets used to waking up at 2:45 in the morning. Truth is we all lead busy lives so we have to optimize the sleep we do manage to get. Enter technology.

Over the past couple of years sleep management devices have increased in popularity, probably as a result of our ever increasingly busy lifestyles. Small sensors are typically mounted on your forehead or wrist which send signals to a base station, recording your movements through the night. When you wake up, you can pour over the data collected to analyze how you slept. For the most part the original devices were uncomfortable and easily fell off in the middle of the night as you moved in your bed. However, newer devices such as the Gear4 Renew SleepClock take a "non-contact" approach. No headbands, no watches, no worries.

Review: LG Optimus G 2600 Smartphone [with video and photos]

by Retired Blogger ‎12-18-2012 05:00 PM - edited ‎12-20-2012 09:25 AM

LG Optimus G 2600_600px-1.jpg

Android has now become the dominant smartphone mobile OS around world, but unlike competing platforms like iOS and Windows Phone, it seems like there is a new flagship Android phone every week. While I am exaggerating a bit, it’s certainly true to say that there are an awful lot of choices out there in the Android phone world, many of them having powerful dual-core CPUs, beautiful HD screens, and fast LTE connectivity. While LG has never been as big of a player in the high-end Android space as Samsung or HTC, this holiday season they have decided to go big, and bring out a phone that spec-for-spec beats their competition.

The Optimus G is LG’s new flagship device, and it is the first Android smartphone to pack Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon S4 Pro QUAD-core processor, running Android 4.0. It also has a gorgeous 4.7" HD IPS+ screen, is made from premium materials, and on the Rogers model it supports their new LTE 2600 MHz spectrum band. This spectrum band supports up to 100Mbps download speeds, making it (according to Rogers) ‘Canada’s fastest smartphone’. The Optimus G is also available on Bell and Telus, but they only currently support regular LTE speeds.

I was able to spend a few weeks with LG’s latest phone, and you can read my full review, watch some hands-on videos I shot, and see some pictures of the Optimus G after the break

Traveling much this holiday? Try these luggage options on for size

by Blogger on ‎12-17-2012 03:32 PM - last edited on ‎12-31-2012 10:48 AM by Retired Administrator

Whether it's retreating from the white stuff (or rain on the "wet" coast) to see family during the holidays, or heading some place tropical to beat the winter blahs, travel with the right luggage and make the commute easy. Doing so will save you time - maybe even your back - as well as make you look and stay organized.

Most of us are still busily preparing for Christmas, but don't forget that once the turkey is eaten and the gifts are unwrapped, New Year's Eve is right on its tail! If you are planning a New Year's Eve party, it's a good idea to make sure you have these four party essentials now.

1. Great music.

Let's face it, music can make or break a party! So, before the holidays get too busy, spend some time preparing a New Year's Eve playlist that will keep you guests in a festive mood.  (And, of course, be sure to have a copy of Auld Lang Syne ready to go at midnight!)  If your sound system is outdated, unreliable (or non-existent), treat yourself and your party guests to a better audio experience with a new docking station or speakers.

(For more information on this product, see "Samsung Speaker Docks Pack a Mighty Punch")

2. A great bar.

It's easy to spruce up your bar area before the big night by adding sleek new bar stools or stylish bar accessories. A wine decanter, bottle chiller, martini shaker or easy-pull corkscrew will make your job a little easier, as well as make a great impression on your guests.  It's also a good idea to take stock of your glassware now to ensure that you have enough for all your guests, and that they won't be drinking from a chipped glass!

Understand and use aperture

by Blogger on ‎12-17-2012 08:22 AM

Av. F-stop. 2.8/5.6. What's it all mean? This is aperture and it's a super simple way to a) blur your background and b) get more light into the camera. Make some beautiful snapshots with it.

Review: Parrot Minikit Neo

by Blogger on ‎12-16-2012 11:23 PM

parrot_minikit neo.jpg

Parrot has built a solid reputation for bridging together different technologies within the vehicle, which can come in various forms and sizes. Not everyone likes how a Bluetooth headset feels, so if you’re on the hunt for a good Bluetooth speakerphone for your car, the Minikit Neo is a good place to start.
