One of the most important parts of what I can do as a blogger is give you a hands-on impression of upcoming products; it’s helpful because you know I’m not told what to write by Future Shop so you can trust what I’ve got to say. The hard part, at times, is getting out in front of product launches, especially with bigger stuff like TVs. LG worked with Future Shop to give me and another blogger the opportunity to look at some of their upcoming models, launching in April. While we’ll have a full review just before they launch, here’s a look at what you can expect when these awesome new models hit the shelves.

We’ve all heard that you should go big or go home. Me? I went big AND went home. I’ve been a huge fan of plasma technology for years, but with its swan song in the air I decided to turn to a whole new way of watching movies and playing games. It was time for me to pick up a projector and get into some serious screen-size action.  Buying a projector isn’t the only thing you’ll need, so here’s a look at the gear you’ll want to pick up to make things perfect in your new home theatre.

When should I upgrade my TV?

by Blogger on ‎07-15-2014 06:47 AM - last edited on ‎07-15-2014 08:43 AM by Blog Editor in Chief

TVs are appliances we replace every four years or longer. This is becuase TV's are big ticket items and costly and also because we tend to buy the best TVs we can at the time. Being the centre of our home theatre experience, TVs play the crucial part of being both the hub and the focal point of our entertainment, streaming, gaming and viewing needs.

TV technology evolves quickly and in various ways. Thinner, larger screens are what people look at the most but the underlying technologies (i.e. LCD, IPS, Plasma, LED) as well as peripheral features (speakers, SmartTV functionality, WiFi, Netflix integration, 3D) are all features that vary in importance to different users and which make the selection of an HDTV even more challenging.

But when is it the right time to upgrade an HDTV? Let's discuss some good reasons to spring for a new set.

Go Big AND Go Home! Enjoying the big game on the biggest (and best) TVs!

by Blogger on ‎06-23-2014 03:29 PM - last edited on ‎06-24-2014 10:25 AM by Blog Editor in Chief

The beautiful game, when experienced in person, can be a thing of almost religious fervour. The sound, the sights… these are the things that make it an event. The idea that you could replace being there with something at home seemed almost silly… until now. With 4K broadcasts on the rise (and big sound making your home just as vibrant as any field) you can experience football (or soccer, if you must) the way it was mean to be watched. Want to know what you need? Read on! It’s time to Go Big… AND Go Home!

Review: Sony's BDP-S6200 and BDP-S3200 Wi-Fi Blu-ray Players

by Blogger on ‎05-31-2014 11:55 AM - last edited on ‎06-02-2014 03:47 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

Does your Blu-ray player need to be pretty? Sony’s BDP-S3200 and BDP-S6200 are. At first glance they look like the typical black slab we’ve been used to since the rise of DVD players back in the late 90s. Look closer and they stand out. The S3200 is a bit smaller, the S6200 a bit larger; both of them have a unique faceted look that will catch your eye if you find a place to showcase them, or they’ll blend in if you don’t. Let's take a closer look.

How to balance TV size and viewing distance

by Blogger on ‎05-25-2014 02:54 PM - last edited on ‎05-28-2014 11:32 AM by Blog Editor in Chief

With TVs, the old way of thinking was that having a bigger screen and sitting closer to it would always make things better. After all, this meant you had the best view of a large image. How could that be bad? Well many of today’s TVs aren’t designed to be viewed from too close, and if you’re restricted by space, sometimes getting the largest TV possible isn’t always the best idea. It’s all about finding the right balance to suit your needs and get the optimal results.

What does regular content look like on a 4K TV

by Blogger on ‎03-11-2014 10:47 AM - last edited on ‎03-12-2014 02:07 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

With the exception of wearable technology, the buzz in the tech world has been the introduction of 4K – or UltraHD – TV to mainstream use.  In case you’ve been TV-illiterate for the last few years, let’s give you a high-level overview of what 4K actually means: the average HD-ready TV pumps out about 1920x1080 pixels, giving us what we know as high-definition TV. To our eyes, we see super-clear programming that – paired with the right television – makes those high-paid actors on the screen seem almost life-like.  Great right? To most of us, this is sufficient for the amount of TV we are watching. But there is that other percent of watchers who want the best of the best; for them, there is now 4K TV. Remember that pixel count we just spoke of in HD TV? Consider it yesterday’s news. 4K TV’s have a pixel resolution of 4096x2160.

Jaw dropping, I know.

You’re watching your favourite western, and having trouble telling a mule from a stallion, when it hits you; it's not your eyesight that's making you squint at the screen: it's the blurry image from that CRT tube TV with the 40 watt bulb you purchased back in 1997. As John Wayne once said, “Tomorrow hopes we have learned something from yesterday.” So relinquish the past and upgrade to something with “true grit!”  There are some amazing new TV products available right now.  Read on, friend.  Read on.
