Now that Apple has released iOS 8 on the eve of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus hitting Future Shop shelves, the new update to the operating system is less the interface coat of paint that iOS 7 was, and more a pack of features that bring it up to speed with what competitors are doing, along with a twist here and there. It’s free to download and is compatible with iPhone 4S (and later), the iPad 2 (and later), both iPad minis and the fifth-generation iPod touch.

Samsung unveiled two new smartphones at an event that ran simultaneously in New York, Berlin and Beijing, with the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. This marks the first time that two unique Note handsets will be released, though neither is a huge departure from the existing formula. The Note 4 is Samsung’s most powerful phone to date, while the Note Edge uses a curve on the side of its screen to display information like a ticker or menu bar.

And while cellular networks have come a long way, their range and reach can be spotty, particularly when you start roving through patchy areas and dead zones. Wilson’s Sleek 4G-C and the Dual-Band Mobile Wireless Booster are signal amplifiers meant to raise those reception bars.

As the title suggests, the weeks leading back to the start of a new school year might require you looking into a smartphone that will help you over the next eight to 12 months. Now, the “best” doesn’t necessarily mean the best on the market, but rather the best for what you need. You may be a student on a budget, or your needs might not be particularly complex, and that’s why the list in this post is focused more on bang for the buck.

LG-G3-main-image-web.jpg

LG has quietly made a statement in the past 12 months that it is serious about making some of the best smartphones money can buy. The G3 takes a few solid steps in the right direction, making the case that sometimes less is more and design is an important detail not to be overlooked. It’s prettier than its predecessor and manages to outperform it in ways that it should, making this one of the more interesting and compelling handsets to come out so far this year.

If it’s true that LG made a breakthrough in the tough smartphone market, it may well have been the G2, which signaled the company was serious about competing with the best. As good as the phone was, in some respects, it needed some work to improve the user experience. This is exactly what the LG G3 seems to be tailored for, not only trimming the fat of its Android skin, but also using a display that is unquestionably one of the best on any handset today.

Review: Motorola Moto E

With the Moto G, Motorola was knocking on the door of the large budget consumer smartphone space by offering respectable performance, great build quality and an almost “pure” Android experience with no annoying overlays and skins. The Moto G was a huge success and Motorola’s rewarded it by making it a mid-range model and adding 4G-LTE as well as microSD card functionality.

At the entry level, Motorola’s created the Moto E, which is smaller and more compact but which offers a decent set of specs for a device that’s designed to replace a feature phone.

Smartphones for emerging markets are a thing now.

Review: Motorola Moto G LTE good value for money

by Blogger on ‎06-12-2014 05:17 PM - last edited on ‎06-13-2014 09:42 AM by Blog Editor in Chief

Moto-G-LTE-main-web.jpg

Smartphone manufacturers have tended to pack in whatever they can into their devices, choosing to offer as much as possible without paralyzing them. Despite a bit of caution in that trend so far this year, flagship handsets will always be about what can be done, rather than what can’t. But not everyone is in the market for the hottest item when practicality, functionality and price intersect. Motorola has looked to fill that mid-range void by offering devices that don’t aim to unseat anyone from a perch, but rather provide value without a big financial commitment. This is exactly where the Moto G LTE lies, a phone that neither dazzles nor disappoints.

Review: Sony Xperia Z2

Sony-Xperia-Z2-front-web.jpg

When it comes to its smartphones, Sony has been a tough company to understand. On the one hand, they’ve made good quality handsets with solid specs, great battery life and waterproofing. But on the other, they’ve been behind on Android updates, software and key design points. Last year’s Xperia Z and Z1 tidied up some of these issues, for the most part, except that the screen quality and camera performance needed upgrades to compete with the best on the market. Enter the Xperia Z2, quite possibly the most complete smartphone Sony has produced.
