From the small screen to the big screen. It’s the kind of functionality that makes a lot of sense in the home. Why watch a movie on your smartphone when you can beam it over to your much larger TV? Why not do the same with your tablet or computer? There are a number of ways in which to do this, and they’re not only easy to use, they also don’t require much to install or maintain them.

Review: Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

It’s patently obvious that smartphone screens continue to creep up in size, and the extra real estate should make it easier to do everything you want to do. Samsung can be credited with having kicked off this current era of larger displays with the original Galaxy Note. The Galaxy Note Edge is less a clone than it is an offshoot of the Note 4, a phone that was probably among the best of 2014. The curved screen on the edge gives it a unique identity and usability, and one that does require a learning curve unto itself.

LG is all about curves at this year’s CES in Las Vegas, showing off some curved TVs and the G Flex 2, the company’s latest smartphone. I got to play around with it a little bit, and it’s fair to say that slimming it down and including a better screen makes this a solid step up from its predecessor.

BlackBerry-Classic-main.jpg

BlackBerry probably had no other name to call its latest phone than the Classic. It is, after all, classic BlackBerry, harkening back to a time when the Bold was the company’s most beloved handset. This device also marks the return of the toolbar with the trackpad front and centre, adding the kind of tactile navigation some users have clamoured for.

Which smartphone platform do you use?

by Blogger on ‎12-23-2014 01:08 PM

OS-logos.jpg

Smartphone loyalty seems a little fleeting sometimes because part of what keeps a user around is the mobile operating system as much as the phone itself. I tend to ask people why they use iOS, Android, BlackBerry or Windows Phone, and the answers usually have a common denominator — they just like it. Comparing the four major platforms, there are plenty of similarities with distinct differences.

It was only 10 years ago that the concept of downloading single songs became the method of choice in enjoying music on portable devices. Now, an entire catalog of millions of tracks can be streamed for a monthly fee. Music streaming services have gone mainstream, and the various providers bear many similarities to each other, making it a little challenging to choose between them. Here’s a look at who’s currently playing in Canada, including what sets them apart from each other.

Review: Nokia Lumia 830

by Blogger on ‎11-25-2014 12:37 PM - last edited on ‎11-25-2014 04:26 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

Nokia-Lumia-830-main-web.jpg

For the most part, Nokia’s Lumia line has been the best option to go with for those looking to have a Windows Phone. The Lumia 830 is what Nokia (and parent company, Microsoft) calls an “affordable flagship”, meaning that it should give you a solid user experience, but not the best specs. Sacrifices in one area or another of a smartphone usually turn out to be trade-offs, though this may be one mid-range handset that does what it can with what it’s got.

Review: Sony Xperia Z3

Xperia-Z3-front-web.jpg

It’s arguable that Sony doesn’t get the credit it deserves for crafting solid, durable phones that tend to also look better than what some competitors are coming out with. The Xperia Z3 continues the trend of looking good in a way that doesn’t shake things up, but does manage to trim the edges just enough to make it a wieldier handset. Outside of that, there isn’t a great deal that’s different compared to its predecessor, making this a more iterative update to the company’s flagship.
