This week, both fellow Future Shop Tech Blog contributor Carl-Edwin Michel and I are in Hollywood with our incredible friends at Sony discovering more about 4K gadgets coming to a Future Shop and Futureshop.ca, technology and how this resolution is the future of the silver screen and into our living and work spaces.

The Consumer Electronic Show ended last week in Las Vegas and we heard a lot about new tablets, phones, and a plethora of cool gadgetries. What about home appliances? Last year, appliances were getting “smart” while this year they are getting “smarter” with high-tech and WiFi. So, when you look for your next refrigerator, will you looking for the one that has a Twitter application?

Samsung has just announced that their 85" 4K panel will run over $30k, with pre-orders starting in Korea. 4K, or Ultra HD (not to be confused with Netflix's new Super HD service) was one of the big stories. So the question is: will this be the year for 4K.

It’s always interesting to see when a brand shifts gears. Mad Catz did it a few years ago, pledging that they were going to turn over a new leaf, and work harder to make better quality products. They delivered on it too.
CaseMast has done the same thing. They’ve got a sexy new logo and some elegant new styling. Pledging to create more upscale products, they’re catering to a premium audience.

Shattering your device, whether it’s a tablet or a phone, can be heartbreaking. That’s why Gorilla Glass has been so popular; it does a great job preventing cracks and scratches in screens.

The Fujifilm X-series of cameras is svelte and sexy. I’ve mentioned before how much I love them and think they’re great cameras. The new X20, shown off at CES, really captured my eye with classic lines and powerful performance.

LifeProof cases are pretty famous for being almost everything-proof. They’re military-spec approved from impact, cold, heat, water, dirt, and so on. That’s why it was so cool to see the Fre case for iPhone 5 put to the test.

Future Shop has been a great place to buy printers since the start of desktop publishing. They’ve had every major model of popular printer from Canon, Epson, Lexmark, and Brother. And while printing is going to continue to be an important part of what we all do with computing, it’s time to take it to the next dimension. Literally. It’s time for Future Shop to start carrying 3D printers.

Withings will be coming out with a new smart scale that will measure not only your weight and body mass index, but also your heart rate and the carbon dioxide (CO2) inside your bedroom to help you better understand why you may have trouble sleeping. The data is shared with a free iOS or Android app, as well as other third-party fitness apps, over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to give you a snapshot of how you’re doing and what it means.

Like SMS Audio in the post below, we’ve got another cosmetic change for a pair of headphones — Sennheiser’s Momentum. Future Shop carries the original brown model that came out last year, but Sennheiser will be releasing a black model with a red cable within a few months, I was told. There’s nothing different under the hood, so the sound will be the same, and the $399.99 price tag will likely be, too.

Geonaute, a company based in France, was showing off its new POV action camera on the show floor, and it may be one of the more intriguing gadgets to come out this year. It has three lenses that capture everything from a 360-degree angle, and you can choose which direction you want to view as you’re watching it later on an iPad or big screen TV.

Tablets and gaming should go hand-in-hand and Razer will be coming out with a gaming tablet that should be an interesting proposition for any gamer. Fusing together elements of a tablet, PC and game console, the Edge is basically the tablet equivalent of what a gaming PC is.

At Belkin’s booth today, I came across a nice surprise. It looks like the company will be announcing a partnership with LEGO to make cases for the iPhone, iPod Touch and select Android devices. Details are still being worked out, but a summer launch in Canada has been all but confirmed. Just how many cases and for which exact phones is unknown at this time, but the iPhone 5 looks like it’s a lock. It’s even possible to connect LEGO pieces to the cases, so this could be a more functional case than most others. Stay tuned for news on this later into the spring.
