Lego City: Undercover Review

At face value, Lego City: Undercover looks like any other Lego game. Cute, family-friendly design, tame action and endless amounts of exploration make up the majority of this game, but underneath all of that lies a game full of tongue-in-cheek dialogue (gasp, there's even voice acting!), pop-culture parodies and plenty of laughs. Dare I say this is the best Lego game in the series?

Defiance Review

Defiance.jpg

Discussions about transmedia always interest me. As we intertwine with technology and entertainment there are always opportunities to evolve and expand in fresh new ways. Gaming is one avenue that hasn't been explored enough, but is already making the rounds, primarily with third-person MMO shooter, Defiance.

Defiance takes place in the decrepit San Francisco Bay Area after a massive terraforming calamity. With this change came the fall of plants and animals and the rise of a new species. With it also came several alien species which eventually lead to a war and even more devastation. Now living side by side, the humans and Votans must work together to find advanced alien technologies. Your job as an "Ark Hunter" is to find those remnants.

Coming off two months of packed game releases, May is looking to continue the trend with its fair share of big game titles.  The month is going to have a mild beginning but will quickly take off mid-month with the release of Metro: Last Light, followed by the HD remake of Resident Evil: Revelations and the upgraded 3D version of Donkey Kong Country Returns.  Rounding out May is the much-anticipated new IP from Insomniac Games, Fuse, and after a five-year wait, GRID 2 finally revs its engine.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 - Review

There are very few sports I actually enjoy playing in real life. Unfortunately, the ones I do enjoy require very specific areas to be played in -- sports like curling, surfing and golf. My family are all avid golfers and, as I grew up, I learned to appreciate the sport more and more. I will never be a pro and unfortunately don't get out as much as I would like but I still very much enjoy it when I get the chance to play. This, in turn, has always made me want to play golf video games as well.

Starting with Golf on the NES and Pebble Beach Golf on the SEGA Genesis, I always found myself going back and playing them over and over. When the Nintendo Wii came out I mastered the Wii Sports golf course there as well (which, turns out, was the same as the NES Golf course, go figure). Shortly after that I started playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, since I was working at a video game store and my boss (being Scottish) insisted I start playing. This being my first HD golf game and playing with a controller, I was amazed at how highly detailed it was and how much skill was required to play the game. This made me very excited to play Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14, which is EA’s most ambitious golf game yet and it did not disappoint.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon Review

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon.jpg

There's nothing more affirming than having a game stay true to its original vision.  There are very few game series I can think of that are still just as they once were, and while change can serve as a great way to expand a series, sometimes it's that original vision that truly shines.

I remember that moment of joy when playing Luigi's Mansion on the Gamecube for the first time.  It was original, funny as hell, full of exploration and even a little scary (shhh).  The long-awaited sequel, Dark Moon, encompasses everything I loved about the original with some cool enhancements along the way.  It may not be a completely original experience, but it stays true to what works.
