For the last year and a half, I’ve faithfully worn my Fitbit Flex.  It gives me a great picture of how much I’m moving each day, and syncs seamlessly with one of my favourite apps, My Fitness Pal.  However, I’ve discovered there’s a tonne of other great Fitbit-ready apps out there to track all kinds of things related to health, wellness and sleep.  So I tried a bunch out.  Check out the ones I love, and the ones not to bother with.

Step counters are a great way to see how much you’re moving in a day, and how active—or not–you really are.  I’m a fitness tracker fan; I own both the Jawbone Up and the Fitbit Flex, and love them, though my go-to is the Fitbit.  So I was pleased to be able to try out a different brand and style of tracker: the Ibitz Unity by GeoPalz.

Healthy Fruit Smoothies

Why are fruit smoothies so irresistibly delicious? Because they are refreshing, filling, and healthy, depending on what you put in them (no vanilla ice cream allowed). Now don’t be fooled by the smoothies you get at a juice parlor: many are known for adding sugar to give an extra kick of yumminess. To indulge in a healthy fruit smoothie, make sure to ask if they are using real, fresh ingredients. However, to be on the safe side, you can quickly make them at home. Smoothies are extremely easy to make, once you have the right ingredients including your favourite fresh fruits such as blueberries, mangos, strawberries, raspberries, banana and the list goes on. For added benefits, kick it up a notch by adding greens like spinach, kale, avocado…oh my. I say the more antioxidants, the merrier. Here are some of the best fruit smoothies.

Blendtec Smoothies

Smoothies in the winter, say what? You heard correctly. Perhaps this refreshing drink isn’t seasonal, but it sure is good for you during the winter months. I understand that you’d prefer to cozy up with something warm like soup or coffee during the cold season.  But a healthy smoothie is packed with vitamins and antioxidants, which can give your immune system a boost. In addition, a delicious smoothie can help prevent the common cold during the long winter months.  Another great reason to drink smoothies is to help detox your system, after you’ve over-indulged on the gluttonous holiday foods. It’s a refreshing way to get back to your healthy eating patterns and fight the bulge.

 Julia Child

Julia Child famously said “This is my invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook—try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, BE FEARLESS, and above all have fun.” I love this quote, as it’s inspiring yet the most encouraging tip before I try a new recipe. When we grace the kitchen with a new culinary adventure, we might not be perfect but our mistakes allow us to take away a great lesson for next time. For this holiday season, do you have someone who loves to cook and/or wants to learn to cook? Let’s take Julia Child’s advice and add the right tools to make the process easier and more fun. Here are the best kitchen gadget gift ideas to bring out that special someone’s inner creative chef.
