Drones are a complicated topic for some people; they’re disruptive technology, where regulation hasn’t really caught up to them. When you think about it, having a radio-controlled airplane isn’t usually treated as that big a deal: I was flying those when I was a kid. Having one that does a vertical take-off and landing, has four props that make it more agile than anything else in the sky without a pulse, and is equipped with a camera strapped onto the bottom ... well there’s only one thing to call it: Awesome. This is the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+.

It gets cold out, men start to grow beards and just like that you know it: hockey season has started. Forget Christmas: the true Canadian family gathering occassion is hockey night, hockey games … well anything hockey. Hockey runs in the veins of all Canadians. Truly, babies in Canada, right after birth should have been given a hockey jersey instead of swaddling blankets. But in all honesty, hockey is so very Canadian. I am not into skating, so playing hockey on ice is not my thing, but I'm a big fan of Air Hockey. If you’re like me, Futureshop might have exactly what you are looking for.

4 Great Telescopes: See to the Stars and Beyond!

by Blogger on ‎10-27-2014 02:20 AM - last edited on ‎11-12-2014 03:59 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

              Scope

Someone I used to know once remarked that telescopes aren't all that interesting. But consider this: Our home galaxy (The Milky Way) is estimated to be between 100,000 and 120,000 light years in diameter. As you may know, light years are a measurement of distance—not time (1 light year is the distance that a beam of light can travel in a single year). At 300,000 KMs/Second (light speed), that's pretty far! Thus, if one could instantaneously travel a mere fraction of the diameter of our galaxy away from the Earth—let's say 100 light years—and could bring with them a telescope of ridiculous strength to look back with, then the events they would witness would be ones that happened 100 years ago. A bit further—say, 400 light years—and one could watch Shakespeare write his plays. Now, who says that telescopes aren't all that interesting?? Learn more about telescopes and check out Future Shop's great selection inside.

Games room essentials: how to play ping pong

by Blogger on ‎10-23-2014 01:52 AM - last edited on ‎10-23-2014 04:40 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

        ping-pong.jpg

"Ping Pong." Strange name isn't it? It's meant to represent the sound that the ball makes from the time it hits the table and is subsequently hit (in rapid succession) by the paddle, sending it back over the net where the process, and the sound, begins anew. I'm not so sure it really works... It's hard to put a sound like that into words. I do love the game though. I haven't played much over the last few years, but I used to play a lot when I was younger, and it was always great fun! I even invented my own special serve, which I call a spike serve, as the ball barely clears the net and comes in really fast. And that is why I'm really excited to bring you this blog! In it I'll give you a brief overview of how to play the game (i.e., the rules). And, I'll show you some really great PPP (Ping Pong Products) that are online right now at Future Shop. Winter's coming fast, and it's time to set up your very own games room. So get to reading!

by Blogger on ‎10-22-2014 06:49 AM - last edited on ‎10-23-2014 05:45 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

Child Car Seats Safety.jpg

Believe it or not, car seats do expire. And while you may be thinking it’s all a marketing tactic to pressure you into splurging more on your little one, rest assured it’s all with good reason. It all comes down to keeping your child safe. As a parent, or as someone who cares for children, it’s your duty to stay up-to-date with the latest information on child safety. One of Transport Canada’s biggest recommendations for keeping kids safe on the road is to pay close attention to the expiry date on your child’s car seat.

I've recently had the opportunity to thoroughly test out 4 different toys from Crayola that were specifically designed to bring out the artist in kids of all ages. These toys are unlike anything I've ever had a chance to work with before, and on the whole they were really quite fun. They allowed me to create art of a much higher quality than I ever would have thought possible, and they did it in a way that was both fun and unique. Some really neat ideas here! Read on for full descriptions and reviews of each toy and to find out which ones are most worthy of a purchase.

Back to the basics - Melissa & Doug toys review

by Blogger on ‎10-12-2014 11:45 PM - last edited on ‎10-15-2014 12:55 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

melissa-and-doug-barn.jpg

The world of kids' toys nowadays is ever evolving: smart watches, tablets, robot dogs etc. It’s overwhelming. I wish for some simpler toys for my child, for toys that won’t blink or talk. That’s exactly why I got excited to review toys made by Melissa & Doug. I’m a big fan of their toys as they are mostly made out of wood, are great quality and are educational ... and definitely appeal to the part of me that wishes for the simpler times. Previously I was the one who decided what I purchased from Melissa & Doug. Today, I’m about to test three random toys, which I didn’t pick. Let’s see if Melissa & Doug toys still pass the test …

Review: Sphero Ollie App-controlled Robot

fs-tech-blog-ollie-sphero.jpg

Ollie - now that’s a word I haven’t heard in a while. My skateboarding career was short-lived: I smacked my chin on the pavement and ended up with three stitches, much to the chagrin of my mother. This Ollie isn’t a Tony Hawk maneuver though, it’s the latest robotic toy from Sphero. With dual-drive tank tracks and some serious horsepower, the question is: is it fun to play with? Read on, true believers.

Review: MOSS Robot Construction System

by Blogger on ‎09-22-2014 02:56 PM - last edited on ‎10-30-2014 01:39 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

IMG_1049.JPG

I had the pleasure to spend some time over the past week playing with a robot. Yes, that’s right. I was playing with a robot. A childhood dream come true really. I always loved robot stuff. Back when I was a kid we had Robotix and other robotic building toys but nothing quite like the MOSS Robot Construction System. Playing with this thing was like my childhood imagination manifest. As fun as it was, I never found myself thinking It was just a toy. This was an arsenal with which I could craft all sorts of robots limited only by my imagination.
