Cloud storage isn’t really the sort of tech that always grabs headlines, but Mega is a different sort. Reason being that Kim Dotcom, the man behind the former file-sharing site, Megaupload, is the central figure around Mega as well. Dotcom may be wanted by U.S. authorities for a number of offences, but his new site run out of New Zealand appears to be all about secure online storage with 50GB given to you after you sign up.

Internet Explorer, the ubiquitous but much maligned browser has been staging a pretty serious comeback lately. For a long time it was less than ideal to use and certainly had more than its share of problems. The latest versions of IE have been surprisingly solid though. If you haven’t checked it out, it may be a good time to do so. Microsoft is trying to raise awareness in several ways to get you to upgrade and try out the newest IE. One push in particular has been towards showcasing how good IE now does with games.

On October 26th we’ll finally get to enjoy Microsoft’s latest operating system. Windows 8 has a lot of buzz around it, though there are also a lot of questions among consumers who aren’t quite sure what to expect. Having played for early builds of Windows 8 for the past few months I’m looking forward to installing the final version. Lets look at some of the changes that might encourage you to make the upgrade.

Again, my biases are going to come out here. I received an email this week from a company and makes an iOS flashcard app called Flash Card Elite (free) and it got my wheels turning. The app’s focus is learning language, but actually it really works for learning just about anything. Which led to a sidebar discussion around the Tech Blog water cooler (aka email) about a post on this topic.
Now, beyond the cool stuff you can find in-store for learning (I’ve always wanted to try Rosetta Stone to improve my German or really learn French) and the cool kits to make a variety of solar-powered vehicles (and bugs!), let’s look at some of the things you can find in the App Store.

Today Microsoft’s Steven Sinofsky in Microsoft’s annual sales meeting finally announced that Windows 8 will launch on October 26th, 2012. We’ve been waiting for this a while, and there was already speculation that the launch would be coming sometime this October so it's great to finally have a specific date nailed down. That is the date you’ll be able to get your hands on either an upgrade, or a new PC preloaded with the new operating system.

A lot of people like to burn their precious data to CDs and DVDs, thinking that it's safe there from any computer crashes and hard drive failures. It's always good to keep backups, of course, but you might not realize that optical discs aren’t quite a permanent solution.
There are to do keeper/managers. There are tools to help you find things. There’s Google. What about something that does all of the above? Something that let’s you jot a thought or note to yourself and then searches the Net for relevant material?
Oh and you can start the search on your iPhone, check results on your iPad, and put them to use on your Mac?
That’s Dunno.

The router gets no love when you really think about it. It was always the one hardware product you set up once and hoped you’d never have to touch again because the hands-off approach meant it was doing its job. When you did have to look at it again, it was usually because something was up with the Internet at home. Those days are over, at least for those consumers who like the idea of using smartphone or tablet apps to manage what the router can actually do.
So you’re out and about with your iPad. Which given how much you can do on your iPad, leaving your laptop at home is a pretty easy call to make (I do it 99% of the time). Then you remember you need to do something that just has to be done on a “regular” computer. Like uploading something from one of your drives (like to a blog) or getting to a document or something…
Usually this would mean a trip home (if it was urgent) or waiting until later. Now, what if you could connect back to your machine at home (Mac or PC) from your iPad quickly, easily, and securely? I think I have your attention now.

You might have been noticing lately that your PC has lately been running a bit slower than you remember it. We’ve looked in the past at some chores you can do to give your computer a tune up but now lets take a look at a software package that can take care of a lot of that for you, and more. Iolo System Mechanic promises to do just that.
Hewlett and Packard's Folio 13 Ultrabook, available from Future Shop for $929.97, offers users a different take on the emerging subportable ultra-light notebook space. This is a light and reasonably powerful notebook that manages 9.5 hours of battery life which differentiates itself from the herd of MacBook Air look-alike PC's.

“Man that would be a great photo except…” How many times have you said that? Whether it’s a tree, post, person (maybe by accident or you want to remove the person later) sometimes “stuff” gets into your pictures that you’d rather not have there. Now, iPhoto, Lightroom, and Aperture all have ways to remove unwanted stuff from your pictures (like zits, blemishes, small stuff) but bigger things? Not so much. Oh and all the other tools aren’t that easy to use.
This is where Snapheal comes in. And believe me I was skeptical at first, but…well you’ll see the results in a moment.
