True Blood Season 5 3D Box Art (3).jpg

HBO's True Blood is back with another season on Blu-ray and DVD with True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season.  Oscar- and Emmy-winning Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) returns as the showrunner for season five, along with returning favourite characters - human/faerie waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), vampires Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard), Sookie's best friend Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley), shape-shifting Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), and teenage vampire Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll).  In Fifth Season, Sookie's best friend is dead and the return of an old vampire foe threatens to destabilize the fragile co-existence between vampires and humans.

Suddenly I’m seven.

I live in Cambridge, Ontario, in a little bungalow in a part of town called Hespeler. My dad is beside me, on the old tan leather couch he and my mum brought over from England when they emigrated eight years before. The 27” RCA CRT TV sitting on the brick ledge in front of us is state of the art, and on it is a gorgeous star field that yields to a grey ship, cutting a swath through the night. It’s not like the Enterprise I know, and the man on-screen isn’t Kirk. This is the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and I’ve never seen anything like it.

25 years later, I’m living that moment again. What was stunning then is dull and lifeless now; the colour space of HDMI and the resolution of HDTV has made the old DVD versions of TNG seem disappointing; the transfers, while decent for the time, aren’t anywhere near what we can do today, with properly treated source material.

Review: Smash Season 1

I know what you might be thinking.  Smash must be another tv show where the cast breaks into song and dance. Of course, that love for musical theatre is a definite highlight of the show, but this is no Glee.  Smash cares to tread down a more drama-filled path and has more in common with Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (RIP).  You'll be in for a ride, even if it is a rocky one.

Fringe ends tonight. Long live Fringe.

by Blogger on ‎01-18-2013 02:19 PM

fringe_wallpaper_hd-wide.jpg

An era ends tonight, as one of television’s best sci-fi dramas is about to come to a close. Shot in Vancouver, the wet-coast stand in for Boston, New York, Jacksonville, and everywhere in between, Fringe is a new age X-Files with an incredible cast and ridiculously awesome plotlines.

It shouldn’t have made it. The ratings for Fringe, despite being the best damned thing on television, have been horrendous over the years. Indeed, in spite of Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv, John Noble and Jasika Nicole’s stellar performances, we have all tuned in en masse to “talent” shows and “singing competitions”. Can you convey disgust in a blog? I hope I just did

CinemaNow screen.jpgRenting and buying movies online has been around for years, especially since Apple’s iTunes Store changed the industry and caused some very notable video rental stores to go belly up. CinemaNow first entered the Canadian market last year, and recently expanded its scope in the country with new apps for iOS and Android.

Review: Grimm Season One

Ever since I was a kid, I loved reading Grimm's Fairy Tales.  The stories I remember reading were extremely visual, dark and disturbing, carefully depicting a classic sense of horror that was both terrifying and exciting.  What I enjoyed most about these stories were the intertwining lore and how even the slightest actions could affect a character's future.   I liked that sense of drama and suspense just as much as I loved learning about the different characters and their unfolding stories.  It's no wonder these tales are still so popular today, especially considering all the supernatural-themed television shows and movies constantly being churned out.  Let's admit, people love being scared.

Playing off of the success of horror thriller heartthrob Supernatural, CTV/NBC has taken it upon themselves to air a new supernatural drama based on Grimm's Fairy Tales, Grimm.  While it might seem like a predictable choice at first, this new television show is much more inventive than meets the eye, and slowly grows into its role.

Earlier today I saw the latest cover of Rolling Stone. An awesome cover featuring two vampires and a human. Naked. Check out the real magazine cover as the image I’m using can’t do it justice. Yet, it's not the program but the programming that is the key...

A new web browser made for your HDTV

4006i2E5CF7A1E84665FEHave you tried, in one way or another, to connect your PC or Mac to your HDTV? And if so, how did you find the experience? The reason I ask is because I’ve done so using a few different methods. What I found was that watching movies or shows I downloaded could be great, but actual web browsing wasn’t so good. Mozilla, makers of Firefox, have tried to answer that call.

Got Glee?

by Retired Blogger on ‎04-20-2010 10:26 PM - last edited on ‎05-01-2012 06:35 AM by Retired Moderator

Last week Glee returned to TV screens and PVRs around the globe. And since the series captured my attention when it launched last year, I planned to watch the much-heralded return later in the evening in HD courtesy of my Telus TV package.
