4 Great Telescopes: See to the Stars and Beyond!

Someone I used to know once remarked that telescopes aren't all that interesting. But consider this: Our home galaxy (The Milky Way) is estimated to be between 100,000 and 120,000 light years in diameter. As you may know, light years are a measurement of distance—not time (1 light year is the distance that a beam of light can travel in a single year). At 300,000 KMs/Second (light speed), that's pretty far! Thus, if one could instantaneously travel a mere fraction of the diameter of our galaxy away from the Earth—let's say 100 light years—and could bring with them a telescope of ridiculous strength to look back with, then the events they would witness would be ones that happened 100 years ago. A bit further—say, 400 light years—and one could watch Shakespeare write his plays. Now, who says that telescopes aren't all that interesting?? Learn more about telescopes and check out Future Shop's great selection inside.

Ditch your booster cables with the Wagan Tech Ion Boost V8!

by Blogger on ‎10-26-2014 10:32 AM - last edited on ‎10-28-2014 03:33 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

wagan-ion.jpg

When I was first assigned the Wagan Tech IonBoost V8 to review, I was a bit hesitant to accept it. It reminded me of the days when my trusty ’89 Accord would die in a parking lot, or on the side of the road, leaving me stranded because I was young and a little bit careless and didn’t own booster cables. I would then be forced to deal with the bitter reality of waiting for relief, or my father, to come bail me out of yet another situation that could easily have been avoided. Essentially, I was hesitant to take on this review because, like with most things in life, I was reminded of all the times my father was right, it IS important to own an emergency pack to help in these situations. Since receiving the battery pack and putting it through its paces, including all the tasks it is capable of completing, I have quickly become an advocate. I feel more comfortable driving anywhere, with the Wagan Tech IonBoost V8 in my car, knowing that I am in control should something happen.

With those nice sentiments aside, read on to find out the real explanation behind my feelings.

Review: Alien: Isolation cranks up the tension and delivers the horror circa 1979

Alien Isolation Motion Tracker .jpg

In 1979, director Ridley Scott unleashed the sci-fi/horror phenomenon Alien on the world. Since then, the franchise has spawned its share of sequels, novels, comic books, and yes, video games. While Scott's universe has growth, its mythos expanded over time, there's still something very special about the unique, sublime sense of genuine horror so brilliantly preserved in that first film - a feeling that is captured once again in Alien: Isolation.

Mac OS X Yosemite: how to get it and what you need

OS-X-Yosemite-main-web.jpg

Apple released its latest version of Mac OS X, called Yosemite, the second version named after a place in California. It also marks a particular synergy between OS X and iOS — not a merging of the two — but rather an easier way to get them working with one another. It also marks a new look, one that flattens the visuals to fall more in line with the current graphics seen in iOS. There are plenty of new features, and a straightforward upgrade process to get to them.

Games room essentials: how to play ping pong

by Blogger on ‎10-23-2014 01:52 AM - last edited on ‎10-23-2014 04:40 PM by Blog Editor in Chief

        ping-pong.jpg

"Ping Pong." Strange name isn't it? It's meant to represent the sound that the ball makes from the time it hits the table and is subsequently hit (in rapid succession) by the paddle, sending it back over the net where the process, and the sound, begins anew. I'm not so sure it really works... It's hard to put a sound like that into words. I do love the game though. I haven't played much over the last few years, but I used to play a lot when I was younger, and it was always great fun! I even invented my own special serve, which I call a spike serve, as the ball barely clears the net and comes in really fast. And that is why I'm really excited to bring you this blog! In it I'll give you a brief overview of how to play the game (i.e., the rules). And, I'll show you some really great PPP (Ping Pong Products) that are online right now at Future Shop. Winter's coming fast, and it's time to set up your very own games room. So get to reading!
