Introducing the brand new GoFlex Satellite from Seagate. I consider it to be the next step in external storage evolution and a solid first serving of a great idea - a backup solution that needs no ports or cables.
What’s so great about the GoFlex Satellite is that it mashes several different devices into one – it’s in its own way a GoFlex external hard drive (usable with any Mac or PC desktop or notebook), a portable storage unit for automobile travel, and a perfect supplement to a tablet like iPad, Xoom, or Galaxy, or even smaller devices like iPhones/iPod Touches and Android phones.
First, just load up the Satellite with video, music, ebooks, and whatever else while it is connected to your Mac or PC. Then connect your device to its wifi signal and play what you want to play, on up to three devices simultaneously (though trying to stream movies to three simultaneously is honestly asking a bit too much). You get to avoid DRM limitations because the Satellite merely holds the data; your device plays it.
The 500GB capacity is, obviously, much more than even the top-of-the-line tablets, and you don’t have to rely on an Internet connection, which as everyone knows can be spotty.
Whether you're sitting at a stoplight in a 4G-enabled city, enjoying a latté in a coffeeshop in San Francisco, or waiting out the winter in the frozen tundra of Siberia, however, you'll get the same performance and streaming capabilities from the Satellite.
Can you unplug your router and take it with you? Even if you can’t take the Internet with you, you can take the contents of your Satellite! It has a Lithium-ion battery life up to 5 hours as well as a USB 3.0 cable (which is detachable and interchangeable with other GoFlex cable modules), a car charger, a wall-outlet charger, and a wall-charger-to-USB adapter, so you'll never have an excuse to be without hundreds of movies to play on your tablet. Next up – an optional skin composed entirely of solar cells.*
Why stop with its capabilities as a portable mini-"router" and mini-NAS box? The GoFlex Satellite is also a member of the award-winning GoFlex line of external storage products, fully usable with any of the diverse GoFlex personality cables that you can choose to fit your computer(s).
Also, it is Mac-and-PC intercompatible, with no need to reformat it, thanks to its included NTFS driver. Given all this, in the GoFlex Satellite you have the latest in a long line of advancements in technology that cram lots of options into one item. While we’re waiting for cybernetic implants, a tablet-and-GoFlex-Satellite teamup can be a good stand-in.

*Just kidding about the solar cells, though that would be a cool idea.
