I dont think you can go wrong with a PS3 bundle or Xbox 360 if they dont have either right now :smileyhappy:

I'm going to assume we're talking about a boy. If I was 15 again, right now, I would probably want the Call of Duty bundle. However, be prepared to be neglected and begged to buy Xbox Live subscriptions and other consequences. If you don't want to pay for the boy's online gaming, then the PS3 is free to play online.

True. I use my PS3 about 95% of the time over my Xbox, one big reason being that PSN is free, and Xbox Gold isn't. That's important not just for gaming, but for Netflix as well. Since the PS3 is a blu-ray player too, it's all around the most used entertainment console in the house. Although the Xbox is getting a lot of use right now in the playroom where the girls like to go on Kinect Disneyland adventures :smileyhappy:

Just stay way clear of the Wii. There's a reason they are cheap like borscht now. Worst Xmas gift since Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf!

To me, it will most likely depend on which of his good friends have. I have all the systems and I usually stick to Xbox since it has a better online community (since people pay for it, they aren't just goign to sit idle or mess with people as people on PS3 would) and more people talk versus PS3. PS3 is overall better as, of course it has a blu-ray and PlayStation makes many deals with gaming publishers to get exclsuive content for their games, for example: Assassin's Creed: Revelations comes with Assassin's Creed 1 and Saints Row 3 comes with Saints Row 2 free with purchase.

Paying for the Xbox Live isn't as big of a deal as people make it seem. It goes on sale all the time for $40-$50 and if you think of it, it's less than $5 a month.

If you were going to buy an Xbox, I'd recommend the 250 GB if he is going to play online.
For the PS3, the bundle with Modern Warfare 3 on sale

Don't forget about the Xbox Live Family Pack which gives four licenses for a fraction of the cost.

I would go with PS3, but that is personal preference.

It's best to check what his friends are playing, as another poster mentioned.  Also, if you know what kind of games he likes, sometimes that will nail it down because not all games are available for both consoles.
