I play a lot more that FPS, and as I said, having played many games on both, I very much prefer the 360 as compared to the PS3. I have already outlined my reasons so I won't go into them again.

I would pick the ps3 for both gaming and media center.
Some points on why I made ps3 my choice.
1: Don't pay for online service. I think that's cheesy on behalf of XBOX, it clearly works for Sony so XBOX has no excuse.
2:Bluray discs stand up to punishment better than HD. I used to wonder why people didn't like buying used games. I thought they were just spoiled, new is always better right? Then I saw some used 360 discs that were so bad it looked like it was in the trash. I've bought tons of used PS3 discs and ALL work with scratches.
3: Bluray drive in a machine rather than streaming through xbox live is much better. Sure you can do that on PSN too but actually owning a disc instead of streaming and using bandwidth is much better. Considering the cheap price some Blurays have gone down to, it's hard to justify paying for a movie and using badwidth for a one time showing instead of buying a physical copy and watching it over and over again for FREE.
4: Some rumors suggest that the 360 itself even slightly moved while playing(like your 300lb brother walking past the 360 on the table) scratches the disc. Never happens with my ps3(and I have a brother that almost weighs 300lbs).

1. Having used both the PSN and the LIVE system, I much prefer LIVE, despite having to pay for it. Everything is integrated better, and I find it's much easier to have an enjoyable online experience. That's personal preference on my part, though.
If you have four friends, try the family pack for $100 a year. I have four people on my family pack, and we each pay $25. The only snag is that as the owner of the account, whenever there is a system update, I have to enter my password for each of the family members before they can go online again.
2. I've never really had a problem with used 360 discs. But I install all of my games to the hard drive, so as long as the system recognizes the disc, there is no problem for me to play the game, regardless of how scratched the disc is. The PS3 automatically installs games to the hard drive (which is why the minimum HDD is 160GB), so the same idea exists there.
3. For watching HD video, I absolutely agree. Having a blu-ray player is much better and safer for the wallet than streaming HD movies all the time. But let's be honest - there's a large number of people who stream HD movies through Netflix on their PS3 because they don't want to pay the prices for the blu-rays. That's the way the world is moving, and before long, I can even see Blu-rays going the way of the do-do to be replaced by digital download or streaming.
4. The 360 is not so sensitve that it will ruin your disc if someone walks by the console. It has been known to happen, but is more likely if say, you've got the console up vertically, or if the console actually shifts position during gameplay. A little vibration won't affect the disc.
One fix to all of this is to install the game onto the HDD where possible. If it's installed, the game disc does not spin during gameplay and won't be scratched should the console shift. Obviously those with the 4GB consoles won't be able to install games on the hard drive, but if you're at all serious about gaming (with DLC being the norm for major titles), why would you want the 4GB console anyway? I've got some DLC (like RAAM's Shadow) that is ove 2GB on its own.
