For the consumer electronics industry, it’s no secret 3D TV is the newsmaker of 2010. The buzz started less than a year ago and the hype has been non-stop since January’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Every major electronics manufacturer showcased their brand new 3D models. Some of you may recall, I had the privilege of seeing the technology first hand at CES and 3D takes the cake as most impressive viewing, ahead of meeting or seeing Lady Gaga, Diddy or Prince Fielder in person.

Everyone wants to know more about 3D; it has been the number one searched term on futureshop.ca for over eight weeks and millions around the world have seen blockbuster movie, Avatar or recent box-office hit, Alice in Wonderland. The curiosity is out there. Tech Blog sensation and fellow 3D advocate, Graham Williams, already posted easy reads on 3D – have a glance for a quick refresher.

With manufacturers like Samsung releasing extensive 3D product line-ups, I’m pleased to have sat down with Future Shop’s Director of Home Theatre, Eric Stockner, to chat about what the hype is about. He’s been following the 3D trend pre-, during and post-CES. Check out the video below to discover why 3D is hot, what features and content you can expect, as well as forecasted pricing. Click on “play” now to gain understand what the 3D fuss is about.

Stay tuned on the Tech Blog as well as futureshop.ca for exact online (pre-order) and in-store availability.

How excited are you for 3D technology?

The last comment of switching from 2D glasses to 3D glasses made me think of this question:   how are people with glasses going to watch 3D TV?

My other question is:  How are we going to get content?   It looks like we will need to upgrade all of our content sources from Blueray player to PS3 and even upgrade our HDMI cables.

Hey DLaps,

Earlier this week I had a chance to check out Samsung's 3D TVs with the glasses. They easily fit in front of my existing pair -- similar to the way safety glasses do. Though they do have a bit of electronics in them, they're not bulky...and I quickly got used to the feel of wearing the 'second' pair.

More on this in some upcoming tech posts ...stay tuned!

Thanks Brad - we can't wait to hear about your experience with the Samsung 3D TVs.

@Dlaps - I agree with Brad having tried the tech to view 3D as well as game with it even with my chunky specks on some occasions.

Regarding content, it'll evolve pretty quickly given all the 3D films that have already released in theatres and will work its way to stores, like Future Shop. Gaming consoles are also getting ready to roll out their 3D games this year.
