Television purchase help

I'm interested in finally getting a new television. Its been over 10 years since I purchased one, and the ol' tube tv has been moved around enough that the 32" screen, is more like a 25" screen.
I'm looking for a tv that is going to stand up against some hardcore gaming, and sports watching.
I was in Future Shop to see the LG 42" Plasma HDTV (PQ Series). The price seemed great at $600, but the sales person really wouldn't go into any features of the television other than they were "bad for screen retention", and would not recommend it to anyone.
When I asked if there was anything comparable in price....he showed me two, a Toshiba and Samsung LCD models, but of course they also cost at least $150 more.
From all the research i've dug up there really isn't no difference between LCD and Plasma...
Was he really helping me out, or just trying to get me to buy something that they couldn't sell in the store?

For years now LG TV's have had the highest fail rate compared to other brand name products. Unless your going to purchase the extended service plan I would avoid LG and take your salesman advice. As for the "bad for screen retention" you would probably need to pause an image over night for that to happen and most products out there have screen savers (dvd players, gaming machines, cable boxes, etc.) and the TV itself should have an auto-off feature.

LCD are supposed to be better for gaming.
Plasmas are supposed to burn in images if left on the screen for a long time.
If you play an 8 hour game fest with the same game the lifemeter, speedometer etc on the game may burn in.
Like the previous poster suggested that this is pretty much taken care of these days but I don't think it is worth the risk if your a gamer.
Also I would like to mention if your T.V. breaks Future shop repairs them. If you buy it there and it breaks you will be without your TV for at least the better part of a month. I'm going on two for my repair.
Hope that helps you.
