I can't confirm 100% one way or another, but typically monitors which include VGA and DVI as an options come with a VGA cable only.  DVI cables typically need to be purchased seperately.

It's funny, because my last three monitor purchases came with both VGA and DVI cables (Acer AL1916, Acer AL1916W) or just a DVI cable (LG W2353).  I guess it depends on the manufacturer.

Actually, you may be right... I just remembered that my HP monitor came with a DVI cable too (if memory serves - the box is in my storage locker).  The problem was that I couldn't use it as my laptop didn't have  a DVI output (I've since purchased a DVI to HDMI cable for that).

But it likely is indeed dependent on the manufacturer. eMachines may or may not include DVI cables, but given the low cost of their monitors, I wouldn't be too hopeful.

I'm honestly surprised VGA is still as prevalent as it is given the fact that it is not a digital signal.

Wouldn't it make more sense for laptops to come with DVI output?  Same with TVs, generally where there is a PC input, it is VGA (analog).  It just doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe there is more to it than I know of, but for video quality, it would make more sense to me to have DVI as the standard output for laptops and the standard PC input for HDTVs.  I thought digital video signals were of better quality than analog video signals.

Strictly from a signals perspective - yes, DVI would have been the preferred choice.  However, in many cases where people hook up something to the video port of their laptops, the purpose is for showing a presentation on a projector, and many of these projectors are still VGA based.  Therefore laptop manufacturers have to cater to the lowest common denominator.
If anything, Displayport will likely replace both DVI and VGA, but that won't happen for awhile yet.
