There is no word yet if Afterlife will come out as a true 3-D sku. I haven't tried it myself but my understanding is if you take a 3-D Bluray title like Cloudy with a Chance Of Meatballs and pop it into a non 3-D player it will read off of the 2-D layer and play like the normal Bluray.

Yup. So your safe with a 2D TV if this one comes out as BD-3D

I bought the Resident Evil: Afterlife Steelbook this morning and except for the small dent on the bottom of the package I'm pretty much happy with it (note that the Steelbook only carries the 2D version and not the 3D one). Just noticed a couple of things with this release though:
a) Even though the paper packaging on the Steelbook and the disc label states that Sony Pictures is releasing this Blu-ray, the disc's contents are clearly designed for Canada only as the Alliance Films logo is featured prominently when you play the disc and start the movie. It makes sense since Alliance Films is the official Canadian distributor of the movie in its theatrical run so this makes this disc an official Alliance Films BD.
b) Most of the special features of the American BD disc is present on the Canadian BD disc except for Sony's BD Live online features. I wonder who decided to have the online feature removed from the disc; when Alliance ports over the features from BD discs by other companies such as Universal they still retain the BD Live features of those discs.
Now I wouldn't mind not having the BD Live online features as Sony's new BD Live website is very diifficult to access anyway, although I get the feeling that this initial BD release will be replaced by a more official Sony release sometime in the future, one without the Alliance Films logo and the BD Live online features included. Still the Resident Evil: Afterlife BD Steelbook is a good buy, for now at least.

My guess would be that Alliance doesn't have the rights to the content that Sony has on their BD-Live Page, which would be why that part wasn't authored onto the disc.
It's similar to how the Documentary from The Wrestler isn't present on the Alliance disc as they don't have the rights to it.
