Shure is a great brand to start with for getting into microphones.

i also suggest if your just starting off getting the M-audio mic that we sell at FutureShop its about 99$ and it comes with ProTools SE which just a limited version of what most proffesionals in the music business use to record/edit/master vocals and make virtual instrumental tracks easily! Also FutureShop has the audio interface/preamp for 129$ which also comes with a ProTools disk! For a little over 200$ you could have a great mic set up for what your trying to do.
