How would I download new books onto an eReader?

Which one? For Kindle, purchases are delivered wirelessly, or simply transferred via the usb cable through your (competitor) account. 

If you want to load your own (uncopyrighted! *)file, plug in via usb and use windows explorer to explore the kindle, then copy and paste them into the folder containing all your ebook files. I can't remember, but on the Kindle I think it's called "documents", anyway, it would contain .azw or .mobi files... pdf's work too, not sure what else is supported though.

if it's not a kindle ereader, but a nook/kobo/sony.

you can transfer the ebooks by Adobe Digital Editions.
